Political Controversy Explodes Over Kerala Rapper Vedan’s PM Modi Diss!
Kerala-based rapper Vedan, known for his outspoken and politically charged music, has once again found himself at the center of a controversy. A Palakkad BJP councillor, Mini Krishnakumar, has petitioned the National Investigating Agency and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to probe a song, Rapper Vedan released over four years ago, which allegedly insults Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Krishnakumar has alleged that the rapper referred to the Prime Minister as a “fake nationalist” in one of his older tracks, raising concerns about the influence such content could have on his large fanbase. She emphasized that while artistic freedom is important, it should not cross what she described as the “basic tenets of accepted norms.”
“Cultural figures are influencers. When someone with lakhs of followers puts out content that demeans the Prime Minister, it sends the wrong message,” said Krishnakumar, adding that her complaint is backed by the BJP.
Who is Vedan?
Vedan, whose real name is Hirandas Murali, is a 28-year-old rapper known for blending socio-political commentary with regional music styles. Despite being relatively underground, he commands a strong following for his bold lyrics and grassroots appeal.
The controversy arrives just weeks after Rapper Vedan was granted bail in two unrelated cases—one involving the possession of a tiger’s tooth, and another concerning a small quantity of cannabis found during a raid on his apartment in Kochi. These incidents had already attracted media attention, but also led to a groundswell of support from Kerala’s CPI(M)-led Left Front and Congress-led UDF, who claim the artist is being unfairly targeted.
Following his release, Rapper Vedan returned to the stage to perform in front of a massive audience, a sign that his popularity remains strong despite the political storm.
This is not the first time Rapper Vedan has blended art with activism. His lyrics often address caste, class, and governance, placing him in a growing wave of Indian hip-hop artists using music as a form of resistance. While his style has earned praise in some circles, it has also attracted criticism from political figures who see it as provocative.
As of now, no formal investigation has been confirmed, but the issue has added another layer to the complex relationship between creative expression and political discourse in India.
