Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, launched the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyan from Ramasiya village in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh, marking the beginning of a month-long awareness drive aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices across India.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan Launches Khet Bachao Abhiyan
The Khet Bachao Abhiyan was officially launched on June 1 and will continue till June 30 across the country. Speaking at the event, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan emphasized that protecting soil health is essential for the future of agriculture. He said that if soil is preserved, farming will remain productive, farmers will become stronger, and the nation will prosper.
The campaign highlights balanced fertilizer use, soil testing, Soil Health Cards, natural farming, water conservation, and scientific agricultural practices as its core focus areas. The Union Minister stressed that the Khet Bachao Abhiyan is not just a government initiative but a collective national responsibility.
Focus on Soil Health Under Khet Bachao
During the launch of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, Shri Chouhan urged farmers to avoid excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. He warned that indiscriminate chemical usage reduces soil fertility and destroys beneficial microorganisms, leading to higher cultivation costs and lower productivity.

He further stated that under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, farmers will be encouraged to use fertilizers based only on soil test results. The campaign strongly promotes Soil Health Cards to ensure scientific and balanced nutrient management for sustainable agriculture.
Nationwide Awareness Drive
The Khet Bachao Abhiyan will involve agricultural scientists, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, agriculture department officials, university experts, and public representatives who will visit villages across India. Their goal is to educate farmers about modern and scientific farming techniques.
The initiative will also focus on advanced sowing methods, water conservation, use of improved seeds, and training on sustainable agriculture. Special demonstrations for crops like soybean, paddy, and pulses will be conducted under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan.
Women and Youth Empowerment
Shri Chouhan highlighted that the Khet Bachao Abhiyan also integrates women’s empowerment by connecting Self-Help Groups with income-generation activities. Women will be provided training, financial assistance, and self-employment opportunities to become economically independent.
Similarly, the Khet Bachao Abhiyan will focus on youth skill development, rural employment generation, and self-reliance, ensuring that villages become centers of opportunity rather than migration.
Sustainable Agriculture Vision
The Union Minister stated that the Khet Bachao Abhiyan aligns with the vision of making agriculture more profitable and sustainable. He also warned against counterfeit fertilizers and pesticides and encouraged farmers to adopt green manure and scientific crop selection based on local agro-climatic conditions.
He added that the Abhiyan will evolve into a people’s movement with active participation from farmers, women, youth, and experts. The campaign also aims to ensure that government schemes reach farmers effectively at the grassroots level.
The Khet Bachao Abhiyan launched from Madhya Pradesh is expected to play a crucial role in transforming agricultural practices across India. With a strong emphasis on soil health, balanced fertilization, and scientific farming, the initiative aims to secure a sustainable and prosperous future for Indian agriculture.
