Delhi Minister Pravesh Verma assures residents that Kirari waterlogging issues will be permanently resolved within a year. BJP government starts sewer line and drainage projects.
Delhi’s Minister for Water, Irrigation and Flood Control, Pravesh Verma, has assured residents that the persistent waterlogging issues in the Kirari constituency will be permanently resolved within a year. The minister attributed the problem to the previous AAP government and highlighted that the BJP administration has already started work on sewer line installation and improved drainage systems.
Previous Government Negligence
Speaking at a press conference, Minister Pravesh Verma blamed the former AAP government for neglecting the Kirari region for over a decade. “Despite recurring waterlogging problems, the previous administration neither maintained the sewer lines properly nor ensured efficient drainage,” he said. Pravesh Verma also pointed out that only ₹43 lakh was spent on sewer maintenance over 11 years, highlighting the neglect of civic infrastructure.
The minister further criticized recent misinformation circulating on social media about waterlogging in Kirari, claiming that opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, were spreading misleading narratives.
Why Sewer Work Was Halted
Kirari has been home to established colonies since before 2000. However, both the Congress and AAP governments failed to prioritize proper sewerage and drainage systems. According to Verma, the sewer line project was approved in December 2020 and was expected to be completed by December 2024, but due to payment delays, contractors halted work. As a result, untreated water continued to flow through open drains, causing streets to flood during rains.

Audit reports also highlighted several shortcomings in the previous work. The current BJP administration has restarted the sewer installation, which is expected to be completed by June 2026, connecting it to the Rohini STP. Additionally, the construction of new drains will ensure effective water disposal within a year.
Ongoing Drainage Projects in Kirari
Minister Pravesh Verma also shared details of ongoing projects aimed at solving waterlogging issues in the region:
-
New drain construction from Mundka Halt to the Supplementary Drain under the Irrigation & Flood Control Department, costing ₹220 crore.
-
Kirari–Rithala Trunk Drain, spanning 7.2 km, being constructed by DDA at a cost of ₹250 crore.
-
Upgradation of KSN Drain, with a project cost of ₹112 crore.
-
Drain improvement works in Sharma Colony, costing ₹9.4 crore.
Minister’s Assurance
Pravesh Verma assured citizens that all ongoing drainage and sewer projects are being executed with strict monitoring. He emphasized that within a year, Kirari residents will witness a permanent solution to waterlogging, ensuring smoother streets and improved civic infrastructure.
