Mann Government launches Menstrual Health Education Programme in Punjab schools, covering 3.6 lakh girls to improve awareness and hygiene.
The government of Punjab under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has launched India’s largest school-based menstrual health education programme aimed at improving awareness, hygiene practices, and confidence among adolescent girls in government schools.
The initiative was officially launched on Menstrual Hygiene Day (May 28) and marks a significant expansion of the state’s Menstrual Hygiene Curriculum. The Menstrual Health Education Programme will now reach more than 3.6 lakh girls studying in Classes 6 to 10 across government schools in Punjab.
Large-Scale Rollout Across Schools
As part of the expanded Menstrual Health Education Programme, over 7,200 teachers have already been trained to deliver structured menstrual health education in classrooms. In addition, around 100 selected resource persons have been developed as Master Trainers to ensure consistent implementation and effective communication across schools.
Officials stated that the curriculum is designed to break taboos, encourage open discussions, and provide scientifically accurate information about menstrual health, hygiene management, and adolescent well-being.
Successful Pilot Leads to Expansion
The decision to scale up the Menstrual Health Education Programme comes after a successful pilot phase conducted in more than 100 government schools across all 23 districts of Punjab. During the pilot, students reportedly showed improved awareness, greater confidence, and increased participation in classroom discussions related to health and hygiene.

Education department representatives highlighted that the feedback from students and teachers played a key role in expanding the programme statewide.
Focus on Awareness and Empowerment
The Mann Government emphasized that menstrual health is not only a hygiene issue but also a matter of dignity and education continuity for adolescent girls. The Menstrual Health Education Programme aims to ensure that no girl misses school due to lack of awareness or stigma surrounding menstruation.
By integrating menstrual hygiene education into the school curriculum, the government seeks to create a more informed and supportive environment for young girls, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Government Commitment to Health Education
The initiative reflects the broader commitment of the Punjab government to strengthen health education in schools. Authorities have stated that such Menstrual Health Education Programme are essential for building a healthier, more informed generation and for promoting gender-sensitive education policies.
The expansion of the menstrual hygiene curriculum is being seen as a landmark step in school health reforms in Punjab, with expectations that it will serve as a model for other states in India.
