The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana helps Mandoli mechanic Gurtej Singh avoid ₹90,000 medical debt, providing cashless treatment and financial protection to families with irregular incomes in Punjab.
For families dependent on daily wages, even a short hospital stay can wipe out months of hard-earned income. For Gurtej Singh, a mechanic from Mandoli village in Patiala district, falling seriously ill not only meant lost earnings but also the looming threat of a massive medical debt.
Within days of being admitted to Chaman Hospital Bahadurgarh, Gurtej Singh’s family had already spent nearly ₹10,000 on bed charges and medicines. Doctors estimated that the total medical expenses could rise to ₹80,000–90,000, an amount far beyond the reach of the household’s irregular income.
With no land or savings to rely on, borrowing at interest seemed inevitable. Relief arrived when Gurtej Singh was informed about the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, implemented by the Government of Punjab under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. With assistance, he obtained his health card and enrolled in the scheme. Once registered, he received six days of complete treatment without any out-of-pocket expenses, as all costs were covered under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana.

Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh stated, “Our aim is to ensure that even families with irregular incomes can access quality medical care without worrying about expenses. Financial protection during illness is as crucial as the treatment itself.”
Gurtej Singh expressed relief, saying, “Our biggest concern was arranging the money. Without the health card, we would have had to borrow and struggle for months. Thanks to the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, my family was saved from that financial burden. This has also protected the education and well-being of my two daughters.”
By offering cashless coverage of up to ₹10 lakh per eligible family annually, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana ensures that medical emergencies do not turn into long-term financial crises for working families across Punjab.
With a projected reach of nearly 3 crore residents across 65 lakh families and access to over 2,300 treatment packages at more than 800 hospitals, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana continues to provide crucial support to working households, helping them avoid debt while accessing essential healthcare.
