CM Yogi Adityanath remembered Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant on his 139th birth anniversary, highlighting his role in the freedom struggle and Kakori case.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid tribute to former Union Home Minister and the state’s first Chief Minister, Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, on his 139th birth anniversary. The Chief Minister offered flowers at his statue and recalled his contribution to India’s freedom struggle, nation-building and the development of Uttar Pradesh.
CM Yogi said that Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant was not only a distinguished lawyer but also an important leader of the freedom movement. He highlighted Pant’s role in providing strong legal representation to revolutionaries facing prosecution after the 1925 Kakori Train Action.
Strong Legal Defence of Kakori Revolutionaries
Recalling the freedom struggle, CM Yogi said that the British government initiated legal proceedings against the Kakori revolutionaries following the 1925 train action. Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant was among the prominent leaders who strongly represented the revolutionaries in the case.
According to the Chief Minister, Pant actively participated in the freedom movement and contributed to several major campaigns against British rule. His involvement extended through different phases of the independence struggle, including the Quit India Movement.
Served as Uttar Pradesh’s First Chief Minister
CM Yogi also recalled Pant’s contribution to the administration of Uttar Pradesh after Independence. In 1947, Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant became the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. At the time, the region that is now Uttarakhand was also part of Uttar Pradesh.

The Chief Minister said Pant faced the challenge of governing a vast state while working towards better administration, economic development and the welfare of different sections of society. His tenure also saw several important reforms, with his land reform model being highlighted as a significant contribution.
Important Role as Union Home Minister
Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant later took charge as India’s Union Home Minister in 1954. CM Yogi said that during his tenure, Pant played an important role in dealing with linguistic tensions and efforts that could have contributed to further social divisions.
The Chief Minister also highlighted Pant’s contribution towards establishing Hindi as the official language of the Union. He said Pant handled several complex national issues with maturity and helped strengthen the administrative framework of the young republic.
CM Yogi Pays Tribute to His Legacy
On the 139th birth anniversary of Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, CM Yogi said his life remains an example of dedication to the nation. He remembered the veteran leader’s contributions as a freedom fighter, lawyer, administrator and Union Home Minister.
Yogi Adityanath, on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government and people of the state, paid his respects to Pant and recalled his lasting contribution to the freedom movement, governance and nation-building.
