The Parliament Monsoon Session ended on Thursday with both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha being adjourned sine die amid intense political confrontation, repeated disruptions and protests by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition INDIA bloc.
The session concluded without a significant easing of tensions between the government and the Opposition. Sloganeering inside the House, demonstrations in the Parliament complex and sharp exchanges between leaders overshadowed the final day.
BJP and Opposition stage counter-protests
The final day began with a BJP protest targeting Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The BJP questioned the Congress over its position on the ongoing protests in Jharkhand.
The Opposition later staged its own protest, with Congress MP Pawan Khera leading a demonstration that included a toy monkey and provocative slogans. The episode added to the already tense atmosphere in Parliament.
The repeated protests contributed to further disruptions, preventing the Houses from conducting normal business.

Opposition accuses government of avoiding debate
CPI(M) MP Amra Ram accused the government of relying on political theatrics and pushing legislation through Parliament without adequate discussion. He alleged that important public issues were not being addressed and claimed that the situation represented an unusual decline in parliamentary debate.
According to him, issues surrounding the treatment of protesting students and alleged use of force required detailed discussion inside Parliament rather than political confrontation.
Government blames Opposition for disruptions
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar rejected the Opposition’s allegations and held the INDIA bloc responsible for the disruption. He claimed that the government, including Home Minister Amit Shah, was prepared to discuss issues raised by the Opposition.
Majumdar argued that the Opposition had been invited to participate in discussions but was unwilling to allow Parliament to function. He also said the government was ready to respond to questions concerning the Jharkhand agitation.
Opposition attacks Amit Shah
Samajwadi Party MP Rajiv Rai criticised Home Minister Amit Shah for addressing the issue on the final day of the session. He accused the government of delaying engagement with protesting students and questioned the timing of the Home Minister’s intervention.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also criticised the government’s handling of the session. She questioned how Parliament could function effectively if the Prime Minister and Home Minister were not participating in discussions on issues raised by the Opposition.
Kharge raises Haldwani controversy in Rajya Sabha
The confrontation extended to the Rajya Sabha, where Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised an alleged incident in Haldwani, Uttarakhand.
Kharge claimed that a stage where he had addressed a public gathering was later subjected to a ‘Shuddhikaran’ or purification ritual by people allegedly associated with the BJP. He said the incident raised serious questions about democratic values and constitutional principles.
BJP president J.P. Nadda condemned the alleged incident and said the BJP did not support such activities. He described the matter as concerning and rejected the suggestion that such conduct represented the party’s position.

The Parliament Monsoon Session remained dominated by political disagreements from its opening days. Legislative business was repeatedly affected by protests, sloganeering and disagreements over issues raised by both sides.
