Mallikarjun Kharge demands Amit Shah’s answer over alleged police action against student protesters as Opposition protests disrupt Parliament proceedings.
Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday stepped up the Opposition’s attack on the Centre over the alleged use of force against student protesters.
Mallikarjun Kharge said the Opposition would continue raising the issue in Parliament and demanded an explanation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the allegations surrounding police action against students.
Opposition Raises ‘Amit Shah Jawab Do’ Slogans
Opposition leaders held a demonstration in the national capital, raising slogans of “Amit Shah Jawab Do”, demanding accountability from the Home Minister.
The Opposition has alleged that excessive force was used against student demonstrators in Delhi and other parts of the country. The issue has become a major point of confrontation between the government and Opposition, leading to repeated disruptions in Parliament.
Mallikarjun Kharge indicated that the Opposition would maintain its position and continue pressing the government for answers.

Mallikarjun Kharge Backs JPC Review of FCRA Bill
The Congress chief also supported the Opposition’s demand to send the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).
The FCRA framework governs the receipt and use of foreign contributions by individuals, associations and organisations in India. The proposed amendments are currently under parliamentary consideration.
The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on March 25, while the revised FCRA Rules, 2026 were notified on June 22.
Priyanka Gandhi Questions Government Accountability
Earlier, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also criticised the government over the alleged treatment of student protesters.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, she questioned who should be held responsible when young people gather to raise concerns about their future.
Priyanka Gandhi alleged that protesters had faced severe police action, including the use of lathis and pellet guns. She also referred to alleged police action in Bihar while questioning the government’s accountability.
Parliament Proceedings Disrupted Amid Row
The controversy surrounding the student protests and alleged police action has intensified the confrontation between the government and Opposition.
Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned until 2 pm amid the ongoing developments.
The Opposition continues to seek answers from the government, with Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders also demanding a response from the Union Home Minister. The government’s position on the allegations remains central to the ongoing political dispute.
