Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held comprehensive delegation-level discussions with his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico in Bratislava, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Central European country.
The talks took place during Narendra Modi ’s ongoing three-day official visit to Slovakia, aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation across trade, innovation, infrastructure, and strategic sectors.
The Indian side at the high-level meeting included External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George, and Additional Secretary Puja Kapur.
Earlier in the day, Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Bratislava, where he was accorded a Guard of Honour. He also visited the historic Bratislava Castle for bilateral engagements and jointly attended an art exhibition with Prime Minister Robert Fico before formal talks began.
Upon his arrival on Sunday evening, Modi was welcomed at the airport by Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Juraj Blanár. The traditional Slovak gesture of bread and salt was extended to the Indian leader, symbolising hospitality and goodwill.
The Prime Minister Narendra Modi later shared his appreciation for the cultural welcome, describing it as a reflection of Slovakia’s deep-rooted traditions and warm diplomatic ties with India. A cultural performance by the Kopaničiarik children’s folk ensemble from the Myjava region added to the ceremonial reception, showcasing Slovak heritage through traditional dance.

During his interactions, Narendra Modi also expressed gratitude to the Indian community in Slovakia for their enthusiastic reception, highlighting the growing people-to-people connections between the two nations.
The visit comes shortly after increased high-level exchanges, including the State Visit of President Droupadi Murmu to Slovakia in April 2025 and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini’s visit to India for the AI Impact Summit in February 2026.
In addition to meeting Prime Minister Fico, Modi is scheduled to hold talks with President Pellegrini. The discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in automobile manufacturing, railway modernization, investment, trade, and emerging technologies.
In a departure statement before leaving India, Modi emphasized that the visit would further strengthen India’s engagement with the European Union, noting Slovakia’s important role as a member state and strategic partner in advancing ongoing Free Trade Agreement discussions.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit reinforces India’s commitment to strengthening ties with Slovakia while building momentum on recent diplomatic exchanges and shared development priorities.
