Historic BJP Representation in Bihar Assembly
Before Prem Kumar, two JD(U) leaders—Uday Narayan Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Choudhary—had held the Speaker position. With Prem Kumar’s election, the BJP continues its strong presence in Bihar’s legislative leadership. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar congratulated Prem Kumar, stating, “He has vast experience and will fully cooperate in the functioning of the House. I request the entire House to offer him respect.”
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav highlighted the Speaker’s constituency’s historical significance, noting it includes sacred sites associated with Lord Vishnu and Lord Buddha. He urged Prem Kumar to involve the opposition actively in legislative matters, emphasizing that the opposition acts as a mirror to the government.
Focus on Assembly Functioning
Prem Kumar, in his inaugural speech, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and underscored the importance of electing a Deputy Speaker for the smooth functioning of the Assembly. He announced that the Deputy Speaker election is scheduled for December 4, 2025.
About Prem Kumar: Bihar BJP Veteran
70-year-old Prem Kumar is a veteran leader from the Extremely Backward Castes (EBC) community. Representing Gaya Town, he has been elected as an MLA for nine consecutive terms. In the recent Bihar Assembly elections, he defeated Congress candidate Akhaury Onkar Nath by 26,423 votes.
Throughout his political career, Prem Kumar has held key positions including Environment Minister, Cooperative Minister, and Leader of Opposition from 2015 to 2017. A doctorate holder from Magadh University, he is widely recognized for his extensive experience and leadership in Bihar politics.
