The Punjab government has taken a major step to strengthen food safety in the state. The production, storage, transportation, distribution and sale of Analog Paneer have been prohibited for one year. The decision has been taken with the stated objective of protecting consumers and ensuring that food safety standards are followed across the state.
The order has been issued under Section 30(2)(a) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Following the order, businesses involved in the manufacturing or trade of the prohibited product will have to comply with the restrictions.
Complete Ban from Manufacturing to Retail
The restriction covers every major stage of the supply chain. Analog Paneer cannot be manufactured, stored in warehouses, transported from one location to another, distributed or sold in Punjab during the ban period.
The restriction applies to both open and packaged sales. Manufacturers, wholesalers, suppliers and retailers dealing in the product will therefore have to stop such activities in accordance with the government order.

What Is Analog Paneer?
Analog Paneer is different from conventional paneer made from milk. Instead of relying entirely on dairy ingredients, analog products can contain non-dairy ingredients such as vegetable fat or oil, starch and other permitted components, depending on the formulation.
Such products may be used as alternatives to traditional dairy paneer. Concerns regarding their identification and sale as conventional paneer have also made food labelling and consumer awareness important issues.
Strict Action for Violating the Order
Anyone found manufacturing, storing, transporting, distributing or selling Analog Paneer despite the restriction may face action under applicable food safety laws.

Several Other States Have Taken Similar Steps
Punjab is not the first state to impose restrictions related to Analog Paneer. Similar restrictions have previously been reported in states including Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
