A major voter verification exercise is underway in Jalandhar as Punjab SIR Notice has been issued to 1,46,551 voters whose details could not be mapped with the 2003 electoral roll during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) survey. Following the notices, large crowds have been gathering at verification camps organised by the district administration.

Many voters are facing difficulties because their records do not match the 2003 voter list, while some cases involve discrepancies in the documents of family members. Due to the rush at the camps, people are reportedly waiting for several hours despite the token system.

SIR First Phase Completed Between June 25 and August 3

The first phase of the SIR exercise in Jalandhar was conducted from June 25 to August 3. During this period, Booth Level Officers visited households across the district and distributed enumeration forms to 16,49,946 registered voters.

Out of these, 14,64,949 voters submitted their forms, while forms from 1,84,997 voters were not received. The administration subsequently categorised voters based on the status of their records.

The data included 50,520 deceased voters, 94,356 voters who had shifted elsewhere, 8,961 duplicate entries, 30,157 absent or untraceable voters and 1,003 voters placed under other categories.

Why Were 1.46 Lakh Voters Issued Notices?

A total of 1,46,551 voters in the draft electoral roll could not be mapped with the 2003 voter list. During the second phase, these voters were issued a Punjab SIR Notice for verification.

The administration is calling the concerned voters to verification camps being organised at different locations and on different dates. Officials are checking documents and attempting to establish the required link with the old electoral records.

Long Queues at Verification Camps

The large turnout has resulted in long waiting times at several camps. To manage the crowd, officials are issuing tokens to voters. However, many people are still having to wait for two to three hours before their turn.

Basic arrangements such as seating and drinking water have reportedly been made at the camps. Another verification camp is scheduled at the PUDA Complex on Thursday.

Voters who receive a Punjab SIR Notice are being asked to appear at the designated location and provide the required documents for verification.

Electoral Registration Officers Deployed

Electoral Registration Officers have been assigned responsibility at the constituency level in Jalandhar.

For West, Estate Officer JDA Navdeep Singh has been assigned the responsibility, while JDA Chief Administrator Tejdeep Singh Saini is handling North. SDM-1 Shubhi Angra is responsible for Central, while RTO Baljinder Singh Dhillon has been assigned Cantonment.

For Adampur, SDM Lal Vishwas has been appointed, while SDM Deepak Bhatia is handling Phillaur. SDM Simranjit Singh is responsible for Nakodar, while Shahkot is being handled by SDM Aditya Gupta and SDM-2 Shayari Malhotra.

What If a Father’s Name Was Missing From the 2003 Voter List?

Some voters appearing at the camps have reported difficulties because their family details were not present in the old electoral roll.

One voter, Suresh Kumar, said he was not an adult in 2003 and his father’s name was not present in the electoral roll of that period. He was therefore asked to arrange documents related to his father’s name.

In another case, Leela Rani said that her own voter record existed but there was a spelling error in her husband’s name. She was asked to provide documents showing the correct spelling.

Documents You Can Submit After Receiving the Notice

If you have received a Punjab SIR Notice, keeping the relevant documents ready can help make the verification process smoother.

For proof of age, documents such as a birth certificate, Aadhaar card, PAN card, driving licence, Class 10 or Class 12 certificate, or passport can be submitted.

For proof of residence, applicants may provide a bank or post office passbook, electricity, water or gas bill, Aadhaar card, passport, registered rent agreement or registered sale deed. A recent passport-size colour photograph may also be required with the application.
