CM Bhagwant Mann releases ‘Punjab Da Itihaas’, a three-volume, 1,980-page book documenting Punjab’s history, culture, sacrifices and national contribution.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has released a new three-volume publication, ‘Punjab Da Itihaas’, documenting the state’s centuries-old history, cultural heritage and contribution to India. The book was unveiled at Punjab Kala Bhawan and spans an extensive 1,980 pages.
The publication brings together different chapters of Punjab’s historical journey while highlighting the state’s social traditions, cultural identity, sacrifices and contribution to the country’s development.
Bhagwant Mann Highlights the Importance of Punjab’s History
Speaking after the launch, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said Punjab has long been recognised as an important centre of art, culture and literature. He said the region has a deep civilisational heritage and has witnessed several significant moments throughout history.
According to Mann, preserving this legacy is not only about documenting the past but also about ensuring that future generations understand their roots. He said societies that protect their history and cultural traditions are better positioned to preserve their identity.
The Chief Minister said Punjab Da Itihaas would serve as an important record of the state’s journey and help make its heritage accessible to younger generations.

Sikh Gurus and Punjab’s Legacy of Courage
Mann also spoke about the role of the Sikh Gurus in shaping Punjab’s historical and cultural identity. He said their teachings encouraged people to stand against tyranny, injustice and oppression.
According to the Chief Minister, values such as courage, sacrifice and resistance to injustice have remained deeply connected with Punjab’s heritage. These values, he said, continue to form an important part of the state’s historical narrative.
Punjab’s Contribution to India’s Freedom Struggle
Highlighting Punjab’s role in the freedom movement, Mann said people from the state made significant sacrifices during India’s struggle for Independence.
He claimed that Punjabis accounted for more than 80 per cent of the sacrifices made during the freedom struggle despite representing only around two per cent of India’s population. He also pointed to the participation of Punjabis in several major movements associated with the fight against British rule.
The book Punjab Da Itihaas documents these historical phases while presenting the wider story of Punjab and its people.
Punjabis’ Role in Nation Building
The Chief Minister said Punjab’s contribution did not end with Independence. He highlighted the role of Punjabis in protecting the country’s borders as well as contributing to industry, economic growth and other sectors.
Mann said the story of Punjab should therefore be viewed beyond its struggles, as the state has also made important contributions through hard work, enterprise and social development.
Punjab’s Contribution to India’s Food Security
Mann also highlighted the contribution of Punjab’s farmers to the country’s food security. He said the state is expected to contribute more than 180 lakh metric tonnes of paddy to the national food pool this year.
The Chief Minister noted that rice is not traditionally the staple food of Punjabis, yet farmers in Punjab have played a major role in helping India become self-reliant in food production.
He said this contribution is another important chapter in the larger story presented through Punjab Da Itihaas.
Three Volumes Document Punjab’s Journey
Spread across 1,980 pages and three volumes, Punjab Da Itihaas attempts to bring together the state’s historical, cultural and social journey in a documented form.
Mann said preserving such records is essential so that future generations can understand the sacrifices, achievements and cultural richness associated with Punjab. The publication, he added, will help keep the state’s history connected to its younger generation.
