Punjab strengthens healthcare infrastructure with 7 new medical colleges, specialty hospitals, and improved facilities for students and patients.
Punjab is taking a major step to enhance its healthcare infrastructure with the establishment of seven new medical colleges across the state. Health Minister Balbir Singh said that this initiative will improve medical facilities, expand medical education, and ensure that students do not have to travel abroad for advanced medical studies.
The government plans to set up these medical colleges in cities like Amritsar, Patiala, Faridkot, Hoshiarpur, and Mohali. Alongside the colleges, post-graduate specialty hospitals will be developed, giving patients access to world-class medical care. The expansion of Punjab healthcare infrastructure aims to provide better healthcare services statewide and strengthen the medical education system.

Health Minister Balbir Singh stated that the Hoshiarpur Medical College will start on March 20, 2026, with 100 MBBS seats and a 300-bed hospital. Earlier, the project’s budget was ₹550 crore, but it has now been optimized to ₹274 crore after engineering assessments. Kapoorthala, Sangrur, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Malerkotla, and Lehragaga are also set to host new medical colleges.
With these new additions, the total number of medical seats in Punjab will increase from 1,900 to over 2,800, further boosting the Punjab healthcare infrastructure. Students will now have ample opportunities to study medicine locally, reducing the need to go to countries like Ukraine, Iran, or China.
Mohali will also see the construction of hostels for medical students, and partnerships with corporate hospitals will be encouraged to improve healthcare delivery. These efforts aim to create employment opportunities in the healthcare sector and further strengthen Punjab healthcare infrastructure.
Minister Balbir Singh emphasized that this development of seven new medical colleges, along with specialty hospitals and improved student facilities, marks a significant milestone in building a robust Punjab healthcare infrastructure. The state’s residents will benefit from improved medical services, and students will have access to high-quality medical education within the state.
