Rahul Gandhi and Congress Leaders Pay Homage to Rajiv Gandhi at Veer Bhumi
New Delhi, May 21
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Wednesday paid an emotional tribute to his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion of his 34th death anniversary.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Rahul Gandhi wrote, “Papa, your memories guide me at every step. My resolution is to make your unfulfilled dreams come true — and I will definitely fulfil them.” He also shared a nostalgic photograph of himself with his father.
Rajiv Gandhi, India’s youngest Prime Minister, assumed office in 1984 following the assassination of his mother, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. At just 40, he led the country until 1989 and later served as Leader of the Opposition. He was assassinated in a terrorist attack in May 1991, just months after stepping down from active politics.
Marking the solemn occasion, Rahul Gandhi, along with Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, visited Veer Bhumi in New Delhi to pay their respects. The Congress party also issued a tribute on X, stating, “The excellent work done by Rajiv Gandhi in the national interest can never be forgotten.”
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in his own tribute on social media, hailed Rajiv Gandhi as “a great son of India” whose leadership inspired hope in millions.
“His visionary and courageous interventions were instrumental in preparing India for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century,” Kharge wrote. He highlighted some of Rajiv Gandhi’s landmark contributions, including:
-
Lowering the voting age from 21 to 18
-
Strengthening the Panchayati Raj system
-
Spearheading the Telecom and IT revolution
-
Launching a nationwide computerisation program
-
Securing key peace accords
-
Implementing a universal immunisation programme
-
Introducing a new education policy focused on inclusive learning
“Our deepest respects to the Former PM, Bharat Ratna, Rajiv Gandhi on his martyrdom day,” Kharge added.
The day served as a reminder of Rajiv Gandhi’s enduring legacy and the ongoing commitment of the Congress party to uphold his vision for a modern and progressive India.
