Sunil Lahri comments on Ranbir Kapoor Ramayana, suggesting the actor may suit Lakshman or Bharat more due to lesser innocence and composure as Lord Rama.
Actor Sunil Lahri, who famously played Lakshman in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic TV show Ramayana, has shared his thoughts on Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Rama in the upcoming big-budget film Ramayana. According to Lahri, while Ranbir Kapoor brings star power to the role, his performance may lack the calmness and innocence traditionally associated with Lord Rama.
Lahri said that Ranbir Kapoor Ramayana may have been better suited to play Lakshman or Bharat rather than Rama himself. “Ranbir looks okay, but the innocence is a little less. The patience, calm, and innocence Arun (Govil) had are missing here. But I’m sure he’ll justify the role with his acting,” Lahri noted.
He further elaborated, “He looks a little harsh; he suits more for Lakshman or Bharat. For such a role, it’s always better to cast a fresh face. A new actor with no prior image or controversy is always an ideal match.” Lahri’s comment came in light of Ranbir Kapoor’s intense performance in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal, which leaves a strong impression on audiences and may influence how they perceive him as Lord Rama.

About Ramayana Film
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra, Ramayana is a Rs 4000 crore project set to release in two parts. The first part will arrive this Diwali, while the second part is expected in 2027. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor Ramayana as Lord Rama, Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman.
Ahead of the release, the makers hosted a grand ‘Rama’ launch event on Hanuman Jayanti, unveiling the first look of Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama. While fans have been excited about the visual, opinions remain divided on whether the actor fully embodies the innocence of the revered character.
Lahri added, “When you cast a superstar, there’s a certain image the audience carries into the theatre. It’s very hard for an actor to shed an entire image and be accepted as the character. That’s why fresh faces often work best for mythological roles.”
With its massive budget, star-studded cast, and high expectations, Ranbir Kapoor Ramayana is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about releases this Diwali. The film’s portrayal of Lord Rama and his story will undoubtedly spark discussions among fans and critics alike.
