Rani Mukerji says wives should raise voices at husbands; social media reacts, sparking debate on relationships and peaceful communication.
Bollywood veteran Rani Mukerji has once again found herself at the centre of social media debate. In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, the actor discussed household gender dynamics, remarking that wives should raise their voices when speaking to their husbands. The comments have sparked backlash online, with many users criticising her for seemingly promoting conflict in marital relationships.
Rani Mukerji on Respect at Home
Speaking about how boys learn behaviour from their fathers, Rani said, “I think respect starts at home. Very easily, when you see your mother being ill-treated, it empowers boys to think that if my mother can be treated like this, every other girl can be treated the same way. Fathers need to be responsible for how they treat their wives at home, because that’s what a boy grows up seeing. If your mother is treated well, boys will understand that women are supposed to be given that respect and that darja in society.”
Rani Mukerji added, “Even a small thing like a father raising his voice at the mother shouldn’t happen. The mother should raise her voice at the father, that’s how it should be.”

She also recounted a playful anecdote from her school days, mentioning she had slapped a boy once and jokingly referring to her husband, filmmaker-producer Aditya Chopra.
“Only one boy I slapped, and the rest of the boys were my friends. And just don’t go and ask my husband what happens to him every day at home,” she quipped.
Social Media Backlash
However, Rani Mukerji’s remarks did not resonate with all fans. Many expressed their disagreement on platforms like Reddit and Instagram, questioning her views on conflict in relationships.
One fan commented, “Why would anyone raise voice against anyone? Can’t we just talk about peace and have gentle conversation?” Another wrote, “Normalising shouting in a relationship—no matter who does it—is a strange hill to die on.” Several users criticised her humour, suggesting it missed the mark or sent the wrong message about marital communication.
Upcoming Project: Mardaani 3
Currently, Rani Mukerji is preparing for the release of Mardaani 3, the latest installment in the popular franchise. The film follows Shivani Shivaji Roy, a cop determined to curb crime in her city, particularly crimes against women. Written by Aayush Gupta, directed by Abhiraj Minwala, and produced by Aditya Chopra, Mardaani 3 is set to hit theatres on January 30, 2026.
Fans are eagerly awaiting Rani’s next performance, which promises intense action and a strong narrative centred around women empowerment, contrasting sharply with the social media debate surrounding her personal views.
