Speaking at a panel discussion during the FICCI Flo Hyderabad Summit, Ratna Pathak, offered rare insights into what makes their four-decade-long marriage work.
Ratna Pathak and Naseeruddin Shah, who tied the knot in 1982, have long been admired not just for their artistic accomplishments but also for their rock-solid partnership—both on and off the stage. The duo, known for their work in theatre and film, continues to collaborate regularly, most recently in Arghya Lahiri’s critically acclaimed stage production Old World.
‘A Fantastic, Fun Ride’—Ratna Pathak
Reflecting on her marriage, Ratna Pathak described the journey as an unexpected blessing. “It has been the most fantastic, fun ride I could have imagined,” she said. “I did not really think it would be possible to have a friendship that lasts so long in such an intimate kind of a setting, but it’s the friendship that has lasted, and that is the most precious thing.”
According to Ratna Pathak, one of the greatest strengths of their relationship lies in their shared profession. “That friendship has been created because we work together,” she said, emphasizing that being in the same field fosters understanding, support, and mutual respect. “I am all for people from the same field getting together. It definitely is a way of supporting, helping and finding common areas of interest; it is quite invaluable.”
However, Ratna Pathak didn’t shy away from acknowledging the challenges that come with being in the same profession as one’s partner. She pointed out that while sharing a field can create a deeper bond, it also comes with its own set of complications. Careers often move in different directions, and success doesn’t always arrive in equal measure, which can lead to moments of imbalance.
Still, she said that it’s their friendship that’s helped them get through the tough parts. Even when their careers haven’t followed the same path, having that strong personal connection has made it easier to understand each other and stay close.

Ratna Pathak also spoke at length about Shah’s dedication to his craft, both as an actor and a director. She praised his unwavering focus and generosity in creative collaborations. “I love the fact that he is totally focused on his work, and he is the most generous person to work with as an actor, as a director, in every way,” she said.
She spoke warmly about her husband’s deep dedication to his craft, calling him a generous collaborator who pushes everyone he works with to reach their full potential. But that same dedication, she admitted, can sometimes be a double-edged sword — there have been moments when she’s felt sidelined by his all-consuming focus on work. Over time, though, she’s come to accept that part of him and has found her own peace with it.
