President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu inaugurated Saushrutam 2026 at the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi on July 15, 2026, marking the birth anniversary of Acharya Sushruta, widely recognised as the father of surgery. On the occasion, the President also inaugurated the MRI section at AIIA.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu congratulated the Ayurveda community on the occasion of Sushruta Jayanti and praised the remarkable contributions of Acharya Sushruta, whose surgical innovations transformed the field of medicine centuries ago.
President Murmu Highlights Acharya Sushruta’s Surgical Contributions
Speaking at Saushrutam 2026, President Murmu said that Acharya Sushruta’s pioneering work in surgery was revolutionary for his time. She highlighted that he introduced advanced techniques in areas including plastic surgery, cataract surgery, tumour treatment, and ENT procedures.
The President noted that the Sushruta Samhita, written by Acharya Sushruta, has provided valuable medical knowledge not only to India but also to the global healthcare community.
She emphasised that preserving traditional knowledge while adapting it according to modern requirements can greatly benefit society.
Ayurveda’s Role in Modern Healthcare System
During her address, President Murmu said that Ayurveda’s holistic approach towards life is a valuable gift to humanity. She stressed the need to ensure that ancient medical wisdom remains effective and relevant in today’s world.

Addressing students and young researchers, President Murmu said that the future of Ayurveda depends on the next generation of healthcare professionals. She encouraged them to focus on practical research, quality evidence generation, and maintaining scientific curiosity.
She advised young professionals to adopt new technologies wherever necessary while following the principles of Acharya Sushruta, including medical ethics and compassionate patient care.

The three-day international seminar Saushrutam 2026, organised by the All India Institute of Ayurveda, will bring together leading surgeons, academicians, and researchers from India and various other countries.
