The India UNSC campaign officially began at the United Nations headquarters in New York as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar launched India’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term.
The campaign launch took place during a high-level event attended by UN ambassadors, diplomats and senior officials. Ahead of the event, Jaishankar also met United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss key global developments, including the situations in West Asia, Ukraine and Sudan.
Jaishankar Meets UN Chief Antonio Guterres
During his meeting with Antonio Guterres, Jaishankar reviewed major international issues and highlighted the strong partnership between India and the United Nations.
Sharing details of the meeting on social media, Jaishankar said the discussions focused on global developments and acknowledged the growing strength of India-UN cooperation.
The meeting came as the India UNSC campaign gathered momentum ahead of elections scheduled for June next year.
India Unveils ‘SHANTI’ Vision for UN Security Council
While launching the campaign, Jaishankar presented India’s vision under the acronym “SHANTI” — Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity.
He outlined India’s key priorities if elected to the UN Security Council. These include giving a stronger voice to the Global South, promoting reforms in multilateral institutions, strengthening future-ready peacekeeping operations, addressing threats arising from the misuse of artificial intelligence, ensuring maritime security and countering terrorism financing.

The India UNSC campaign aims to position the country as a responsible global partner committed to peace, dialogue and international cooperation.
India to Contest for 2028-29 UNSC Seat
India will contest against Tajikistan for the single Asia-Pacific Group seat during the elections for the 2028-29 non-permanent term of the Security Council.
If elected, it will mark India’s ninth tenure as a non-permanent member of the powerful 15-member UN Security Council. India most recently served on the council during the 2021-22 term.

Jaishankar said the world is currently facing growing conflicts and instability despite unprecedented technological and economic progress, making the role of the United Nations more important than ever.
India Highlights Global Peace and Reform Agenda
A special campaign video showcased India’s humanitarian assistance, disaster relief efforts and growing global leadership. It also featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message that “this is not an era of war, but one of dialogue and diplomacy.”
Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to representing the concerns of developing nations and advocating reforms in global governance.
The India UNSC campaign also emphasizes the need for a more democratic, representative and effective multilateral system capable of addressing modern global challenges.

With elections approaching next year, the India UNSC campaign reflects New Delhi’s ambition to play a larger role in maintaining international peace and security.
