The Sonam Wangchuk hunger strike entered its 17th day on Tuesday, with the environmental activist refusing to end his indefinite fast despite worsening health. According to the latest health update, Wangchuk has lost 8.5 kg since beginning the hunger strike and is experiencing muscle loss and severe physical discomfort.
Supporters and political leaders have urged him to end the fast, but Wangchuk has maintained that the government should first initiate a meaningful dialogue.
Wangchuk Says Government Must Begin Talks
Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke said he personally requested Wangchuk to end the fast because of his deteriorating condition.
However, Wangchuk reportedly responded by saying that instead of asking him to stop fasting, people should ask the government why it was unwilling to hold discussions.
According to the health bulletin issued by the organisation, Wangchuk’s blood pressure was recorded at 109/70 mm Hg, while his continued weight loss has raised concerns among doctors and supporters.
The Sonam Wangchuk hunger strike has now become a major talking point as his health continues to decline.
Political Leaders Express Concern
Dipke said Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal contacted him to enquire about Wangchuk’s health and expressed concern over his condition.
According to Dipke, Kejriwal also extended support to the CJP’s planned “March to Parliament” on July 20.
Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray also reportedly spoke with Dipke and appealed to Wangchuk to end his hunger strike, saying that his health should remain the top priority. Thackeray also expressed support for the proposed protest march.

Student Protest Continues Alongside Wangchuk
The Sonam Wangchuk hunger strike is taking place alongside an ongoing protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party.
Meanwhile, AISA activist Deepak, whose health deteriorated during the indefinite fast, was discharged from Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after doctors confirmed that his ECG was normal and his condition had stabilised.
The organisation said that other activists, including Neha, Manish and Aameen, continue their indefinite hunger strike at the protest site.
CJP Demands Action Over Examination Issues
The Cockroach Janta Party is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and compensation of ₹1 crore for the families of students who allegedly died by suicide due to examination-related irregularities.
The organisation is also preparing for its “Chalo Sansad” march scheduled for July 20, coinciding with the beginning of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The Sonam Wangchuk hunger strike has added significant public attention to the ongoing protest, with organisers urging more people to join their campaign.
Protest Shows No Signs of Ending
The CJP’s agitation began on June 20, while Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest on June 28 before starting his indefinite hunger strike.
As the Sonam Wangchuk hunger strike continues, all eyes remain on whether the government will respond with dialogue amid growing concern over the activist’s health and increasing political support for the protest.
