Uttar Pradesh milk production soars 40% to 388 lakh MT, contributing 16% to India’s total; rural women drive dairy growth under CM Yogi’s leadership.
Uttar Pradesh has achieved a historic milestone in the dairy sector, emerging as the undisputed leader in India’s milk production. Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state has recorded a staggering 40% increase in output, reaching a monumental 388 lakh metric tonnes. This surge has propelled Uttar Pradesh ahead of other major dairy-producing states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
A Massive Leap in National Contribution
Currently, the top five dairy-producing states in India account for 54% of the country’s total output. Among them, Uttar Pradesh alone contributes a massive 16% to the national milk production. This figure highlights the state’s growing economic strength and its robust dairy infrastructure.
The growth trajectory under the current administration is remarkable. In the 2016-17 financial year, the state’s production stood at 277 lakh metric tonnes. By 2024-25, this figure surpassed 388 lakh metric tonnes, showcasing a transformative era for the livestock and dairy industry.

Strategic Governance and Ground-Level Impact
Mukesh Meshram, Additional Chief Secretary of the Animal Husbandry Department, attributed this success to strategic planning. “The 40% growth in milk production is a direct result of planned development and the solid efforts made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the grassroots level,” he stated.
The government’s focus on livestock health, better breeding facilities, and financial incentives for dairy farmers has played a pivotal role in maintaining the state’s “badshahat” (dominance) in this sector.
Rural Women: The Backbone of the Dairy Revolution
A unique feature of this dairy boom is the active participation of rural women. Through the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission, millions of women have become self-reliant. Across 31 districts, women’s self-help groups are collecting nearly 10 lakh liters of milk daily.
As of February 2026, the cumulative turnover of women-led dairy cooperatives has reached an impressive ₹5,000 crore. Major entities like Balinee MPCL in Bundelkhand, Kashi MPCL in Purvanchal, and Baba Gorakhnath Kripa MPCL in the Gorakhpur division are empowering over four lakh female farmers. This inclusion has not only boosted milk production but has also revitalized the rural economy.
The Changing Face of Uttar Pradesh
The record-breaking rise in milk production is more than just an economic statistic; it is a symbol of a changing Uttar Pradesh. By integrating women into the economic mainstream and modernizing dairy collection, the state has set a benchmark for the rest of the country. With continued investment in technology and animal welfare, UP is poised to further consolidate its position as the powerhouse of India’s dairy industry.
