Zakir Khan announces an extended break from comedy due to health concerns and hereditary illnesses. He will focus on recovery while completing pending commitments.
Popular stand-up comedian Zakir Khan has announced that he will be taking an extended break from comedy, citing serious health concerns, including hereditary illnesses, as the primary reason. The announcement has shocked fans across India, who have followed his decade-long career in stand-up comedy and live performances.
In a recent interview with Gulf News, Zakir Khan opened up about the toll his relentless work schedule has taken on his body. “I need to take care of my health. There are certain genetic illnesses in my family that tend to surface after a particular age. On top of that, I’ve damaged my body myself, sleeping for just two hours and then meeting thousands of people. Because the moment you land in a city, you immediately start meeting people,” he said.
Zakir Khan explained that being the first in his family to achieve large-scale success brought immense responsibility, not only for himself but also for future generations. “That feeling pushed me to put work above everything else for nearly a decade, a choice that has now begun to take a toll on my body,” he admitted.
The comedian further elaborated that after years of non-stop touring and performances, he realized last year during a US tour that managing both work and health was no longer sustainable. “When you keep your foot on the accelerator for ten straight years, the body is bound to take a hit. I initially thought I’d manage health alongside work, but last year I realized it wouldn’t be possible. That’s when I made this decision,” Zakir said.

During a live show in Hyderabad as part of his ongoing Papa Yaar Tour, Zakir informed the audience that the break could extend for several years, potentially until 2028, 2029, or even 2030, depending on the completion of his current commitments. “It will be a break of three, four, or five years to take care of my health and to sort out a few other things. Everyone present here tonight is very close to my heart. Your presence means more to me than you can imagine, and I will always be grateful to all of you. Thank you so much,” he shared.
Zakir Khan also clarified that his statement about Hyderabad referred specifically to the city, and once he resumes work, he plans to restart performances gradually across other locations. In an Instagram post, he mentioned that all shows until June 20, 2026, will proceed as scheduled and will be treated as celebrations for his fans.
Fans have expressed mixed emotions on social media, with many showing support for Zakir’s decision while expressing eagerness for his eventual return. Industry experts say Zakir Khan’s transparency about health and personal priorities highlights a growing awareness among entertainers about the importance of well-being over relentless work schedules.
This announcement marks a significant pause in the career of one of India’s most beloved comedians, whose sharp wit, relatable humor, and heartfelt storytelling have made him a household name.
