Punjab Govt assures 63,702 consumers will retain 300 free electricity units despite billing issues, with genuine complaints to be resolved within 15 days.
The Punjab government has announced relief for consumers who faced problems because of provisional or unusually high electricity bills. Power Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond said 300 Free Electricity Units Punjab beneficiaries affected during the recent billing disruption will not lose their entitlement under the state’s free power scheme.
According to the government, as many as 63,702 consumers were affected by provisional billing during the meter readers’ strike. The government has assured that eligible consumers will continue to receive the benefit of 300 free electricity units despite the billing irregularities.
Billing Problems Linked to Strike and New System
The billing difficulties reportedly emerged during the April-July 2026 strike by meter readers. At the same time, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) was shifting to a new unified billing system.
These developments resulted in provisional bills being issued to some consumers, while others reportedly received bills that were higher than expected. The government has now directed PSPCL to address the complaints and ensure that consumers are charged according to their actual electricity consumption.
The assurance is particularly significant for households relying on the 300 Free Electricity Units Punjab scheme, as billing discrepancies could otherwise affect their eligibility or payment calculations.
PSPCL Introduces Safeguards Against High Bills
To reduce the chances of similar problems in the future, PSPCL has introduced software-related corrections in its billing system. New safeguards have also been put in place to identify unusually high bills before they reach consumers.
The system is intended to flag abnormal billing patterns so that potential errors can be checked before bills are generated and delivered.
The government said these measures are aimed at making electricity billing more reliable and reducing inconvenience for consumers.

Special Team to Handle Complaints
A dedicated helpline is also expected to be launched shortly to make it easier for consumers to report billing-related problems.
In addition, PSPCL has deployed a special team comprising 20 officials to deal with complaints and review cases involving billing discrepancies.
Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond assured consumers that genuine billing errors would be rectified within 15 days. He also made it clear that consumers would ultimately be required to pay only for the electricity they actually used.
This means eligible beneficiaries of the 300 Free Electricity Units Punjab scheme will not be penalised because of billing errors that were not caused by their actual consumption.
Payments Already Made Will Be Adjusted
PSPCL CMD Dr. Basant Garg said that consumers who have already made payments against bills affected by such discrepancies will not have to bear the financial burden of the errors.
Wherever required, payments already deposited by consumers will be adjusted against their respective electricity accounts.
The adjustment mechanism is expected to provide further relief to households that paid higher amounts because of provisional or inflated bills.
Government Assures Consumers of Free Power Benefit
The Punjab government’s latest announcement is intended to ensure that billing-related technical or administrative issues do not deprive eligible consumers of their electricity benefits.
With 63,702 consumers reportedly affected by provisional billing during the meter readers’ strike, the assurance covers a significant number of households. The government’s emphasis remains on correcting genuine errors, improving billing safeguards and ensuring that consumers are charged only according to actual consumption.
For beneficiaries, the protection of the 300 Free Electricity Units Punjab benefit means that an incorrect or provisional bill will not automatically result in the loss of their entitled free electricity units.
The new complaint mechanism, dedicated team and billing-system safeguards are expected to make the resolution process faster and provide consumers with greater confidence in the electricity billing system.
