Director Mohit Suri recently shared this little-known story during an interview on Cyrus Broacha’s podcast, ahead of his new film Saiyaara. Mohit recalled how the music label wanted Arijit to sign a binding contract, which the then-unknown singer refused. Since no songs had released yet, Arijit wasn’t famous, and the label was ready to replace him.
Mohit said, “The head of the music label was shouting at me and Mithoon. They wanted Arijit to sign a contract to control his talent. He refused. We were like, ‘No way, we’ll take our songs back. You can get other singers, but we are not replacing him.’”
Music director Mithoon was the one who firmly stood up for Arijit at this crucial moment. Mohit humbly added, “I was just fighting for my music director, but Mithoon really put his foot down.”
When asked if he knew Arijit would become a legend, Mohit confidently replied, “Yes, we’d never made music like that before.”
Today, Arijit Singh’s soulful voice dominates Bollywood charts and streaming platforms worldwide. It’s fascinating to think how close the industry came to losing him at the very start of his journey.
