According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out suddenly at around 3:30 p.m., starting from the rear of the overloaded bus carrying 57 passengers. Several terrified passengers attempted to escape by jumping from the moving vehicle. Despite quick response from the local fire brigade, the bus was almost entirely consumed by flames upon arrival, making rescue operations extremely challenging.
The injured, including women and children, were initially taken to Jawahar Government Hospital in Jaisalmer, with many later referred to hospitals in Jodhpur due to the severity of their burns. Several victims are reported to have suffered burns covering up to 70% of their bodies, with many in critical condition.
Nineteen passengers died instantly at the scene, while one succumbed to injuries en route to medical care. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, offering support to the affected families. He announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 to each injured individual. “Distressed by the loss of lives due to a mishap in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families during this difficult time. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured,” PM Modi tweeted.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, visibly shaken by the tragedy, canceled all his engagements in Jaipur and immediately flew to Jaisalmer. Accompanied by Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar, the CM is closely monitoring the situation and plans to visit the injured in Jodhpur.
Municipal Council Fire Officer Krishnapal Singh Rathore confirmed that the fire had completely engulfed the bus before the arrival of the firefighting team. He noted that 10 to 12 passengers were feared to have been burnt alive inside the bus.
Local residents and passersby rushed to assist the victims and authorities, showcasing the community’s resilience in the face of disaster.
This tragic event has sparked demands for stringent safety regulations and better emergency response protocols for public transport in Rajasthan.
