PM Modi skipped the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia amid concerns over Trump’s statements on Pakistan and Bihar elections, participating virtually to maintain diplomacy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose not to attend the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia, sparking speculation over possible discussions between US President Donald Trump and Pakistan. Officials suggest that Modi may have avoided potential sensitive remarks on Pakistan, which could have had political repercussions ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections. The Indian government has not officially commented on the reasons behind the PM’s absence.
Trump and Pakistan Issue
Reports indicate that Indian authorities were concerned that Trump might claim credit for the India-Pakistan ceasefire. India has maintained that the ceasefire was a bilateral decision following a request from Pakistan’s DGMO, with no third-party involvement. Trump, however, has stated that he played a role in ensuring both countries avoided conflict, citing trade concerns as leverage.

Bihar Elections Connection
With Bihar Assembly elections underway, Modi, as the BJP’s key campaign leader, reportedly did not want to risk attending Malaysia and potentially facing controversy if Trump made statements on Pakistan. Opposition parties could have leveraged any such remarks for political gain.
Virtual Participation
Since forming the government in 2014, PM Modi has participated in almost all ASEAN summits, except in 2022. During the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–21), the summits were held virtually. For the recent summit, Modi chose virtual participation and delivered his speech online, continuing India’s engagement while avoiding any sensitive diplomatic complications.
India and Pakistan’s Differing Narratives
While India emphasizes the ceasefire as a bilateral arrangement, Pakistan has credited Trump for the outcome and even nominated him for a Nobel Prize. Additionally, the US imposes comparatively lower tariffs on Pakistan than on India, further complicating economic and diplomatic dynamics between the nations.
The summit highlighted the fine balance India maintains between diplomatic engagement, domestic politics, and regional security, with PM Modi strategically navigating both international and electoral considerations.
