High-speed Spain train derails near Cordoba, Spain, killing 21 and injuring dozens. Iryo and Renfe trains collide in Andalusia; rescue operations underway.
A high-speed Spain Train derailment in southern Spain has left at least 21 people dead and dozens injured, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred near the village of Adamuz when the tail end of an evening Spain Train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and collided with an oncoming train carrying around 200 passengers.
The derailment, which occurred at approximately 7:45 PM, involved a private train operated by Iryo and a public train run by Renfe. According to Spain’s Transport Minister Oscar Puente, the back carriages of the Iryo train jumped the tracks and slammed into the head of the Renfe train, causing the first two carriages of the latter to derail and fall down a 4-meter slope.
“There was a moment when it felt like an earthquake, and the Spain Train had indeed derailed,” said journalist Salvador Jimenez, a passenger on one of the trains. Survivors were forced to use emergency hammers to break windows and escape, while some climbed out of tilted carriages.
Rescue Operations and Injuries
Local emergency services, including the Spanish Red Cross, Civil Guard, and Civil Defense units, worked throughout the night to rescue passengers. Andalusia regional President Juanma Moreno reported that 75 passengers were hospitalized, including 15 with serious injuries.

The crash site, located in a remote area, was difficult to access. Residents brought blankets and water to aid rescue operations, while military emergency relief units joined the efforts.
Cause of the Crash Still Unknown
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the derailment. Minister Puente described the incident as “truly strange” since the tracks had been recently renovated in May, and the Iryo train involved was less than four years old. Investigations could take up to a month.
Government and Public Response
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed condolences on social media, calling the night “one of deep sadness” for the country. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia also shared their concern for the victims and families. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she was closely following developments.
Renfe temporarily suspended Spain Train services between Madrid and Andalusian cities to allow for rescue operations and safety inspections.
Historical Context
Spain’s high-speed rail network, the largest in Europe, spans over 3,100 kilometers and transports millions annually. The last major rail disaster in Spain occurred in 2013, when 80 people died after a train exceeded speed limits.
The current incident underscores the risks even on modern, high-speed lines, prompting authorities to launch a detailed investigation to prevent future tragedies.
