IAF trainer aircraft makes emergency landing in Prayagraj after mid-air technical malfunction. Both pilots safe; inquiry ordered. Details here.
In a dramatic incident on Wednesday, an Indian Air Force (IAF) trainer aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in an uninhabited area near Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The aircraft, a microlight two-seater, was conducting a routine training sortie from Air Force Station Bamrauli when it developed a technical malfunction mid-flight.
According to IAF officials, both pilots onboard were rescued safely without any injuries. Initial reports of a crash caused concern among locals, but the situation was contained quickly, and no civilian casualties or property damage were reported.
Eyewitnesses described seeing the small propeller-driven aircraft lose control before landing in a nearby pond. Thick smoke was seen rising from the site, prompting rapid deployment of emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) divers and local fire tenders. The area was secured shortly thereafter.

Indian Air Force Confirms Incident
In an official statement, the IAF clarified that the microlight aircraft was force-landed safely in an uninhabited area to prevent any damage to life or property. “A Microlite aircraft of the IAF, undertaking a routine sortie from AF Station Bamrauli near Prayagraj at 1215 hrs on 21 Jan 2026, experienced a technical malfunction and was safely force-landed. Both pilots are safe, and a Court of Inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause,” the statement read.
Wg Cdr Debartho Dhar, PRO and spokesperson for the Prayagraj region, confirmed that the aircraft took off earlier in the day and had to perform an emergency landing at 12:07 pm.
Previous IAF Training Incident in Chennai
This is not the first such occurrence this year. In November 2025, an IAF PC-7 Mk II trainer aircraft crashed near Tambaram in Chennai during a routine training mission. The pilot ejected safely, and no damage to property or civilians was reported. A Court of Inquiry was also constituted to investigate the cause of that incident.
The Prayagraj emergency landing underscores the IAF’s focus on pilot safety and rapid response in the event of technical malfunctions. The ongoing inquiry will provide clarity on the cause and ensure measures are taken to prevent similar incidents in future training flights.
