Gold and silver markets witnessed high volatility on 30 January 2026, with gold prices seeing a significant decline following silver’s steep fall. Amid profit-booking and safe-haven demand, the yellow metal (gold) softened after reaching record highs in the previous session.
Gold and Silver Market Overview
The bullion market has been extremely volatile, with gold and silver hitting record highs and then sharply declining within a single day. Silver, which had surged close to ₹4 lakh, experienced a sudden drop to around ₹65,000. Gold prices also fell, with spot gold registering a 0.5% decline.
In early Asian trading on Friday, gold prices fell amid fluctuating investor sentiment, influenced by both safe-haven demand and profit-taking. According to Investing.com, spot gold dropped 0.5% to $5,342.70 per ounce, while April gold futures traded at $5,365.39 per ounce, up 0.3%.

On Friday morning at 9:15 AM, gold prices fell by approximately ₹7,000. The 5 February 2026 delivery gold rate was ₹1,62,000 per 10 grams, down ₹7,403 or around 4.37% from the previous close. As of 9:05 AM, the contract opened at ₹1,67,899, while the previous close was ₹1,69,403.

Despite the Fall, Prices Remain High
Even with the slight dip, gold prices remained elevated, making January a remarkable month. Gold gained nearly 24% this month, marking the best monthly performance since the 1980s. Silver, meanwhile, rose over 62% in January, showing extraordinary gains.
During January, gold rose roughly $1,000 per ounce, driven by high safe-haven demand amid geopolitical tensions, especially between the U.S. and other global powers. This surge increased interest in physical assets and precious metals.
Weekly Volatility in Precious Metals
After the decline on Friday, gold had surged to nearly $5,600 per ounce on Thursday. The spike followed reports of potential U.S.-Iran tensions, which intensified safe-haven buying. Other precious metals also experienced minor corrections on Friday: spot silver fell 1% to $114.0470 per ounce, while platinum dropped about 2% to $2,600 per ounce.
Gold Rates in the Domestic Market
In India’s retail market, gold was priced at ₹1,78,860 per 10 grams, while 22-carat gold traded at ₹1,63,960 per 10 grams. Global uncertainties, combined with a sharp fall in the U.S. dollar, supported precious metal prices. Meanwhile, silver, platinum, and palladium continued to attract strong investor interest, with silver showing particularly impressive gains in January.
Investors are advised to monitor market fluctuations closely and consider both global trends and domestic bullion rates before making investment decisions.
