Sonam Wangchuk shifted to hospital during his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, triggering protests as supporters continue agitation over exam reforms.
Tension and confusion erupted at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday morning after police shifted climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to a hospital while he was on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike. The move led to protests from supporters who attempted to prevent authorities from taking him away.
Wangchuk had been fasting in support of students demanding action over alleged examination paper leaks and seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Police Move Sparks Protest at Jantar Mantar
According to protesters, police personnel arrived at the protest site early in the morning and moved towards the stage where Sonam Wangchuk was sitting. Supporters gathered around him and formed a human chain in an attempt to stop the authorities.
Police officials placed a large curtain around the stage before escorting Sonam Wangchuk from the location. The situation turned tense as protesters and police personnel were involved in pushing and jostling during the process.
Some protesters claimed that they were not informed about the action in advance and requested authorities to allow Wangchuk’s medical team to complete health checks before shifting him.

Supporters Claim Force Was Used
A protester alleged that several people were injured during the confrontation. He claimed that the removal process happened suddenly and that many supporters suffered minor injuries while trying to oppose the move.
Another protester said that the agitation would continue despite Sonam Wangchuk being taken to the hospital. Supporters stated that their demands regarding examination reforms and action against paper leaks remain unchanged.
Protest Movement Continues
Even after Sonam Wangchuk was shifted, the atmosphere at Jantar Mantar remained active, with demonstrators continuing their protest through slogans, songs and other forms of expression.
Meanwhile, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijit Dipke began his indefinite hunger strike at the protest site, with supporters announcing that the movement would continue until their demands are addressed.
The protest has brought renewed attention to concerns raised by students regarding examination transparency, alleged paper leaks and reforms in the education system.
