The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has significantly increased its presence on Instagram after Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged Union ministers and senior party leaders to strengthen their digital engagement with young citizens. The move comes in the wake of the nationwide debate over the NEET-UG paper leak controversy, where social media emerged as a powerful platform for student mobilisation.
Instagram Becomes BJP’s Key Digital Platform
The BJP is now using Instagram as one of its primary communication channels to connect with younger audiences. Party leaders have stepped up the frequency of reels, short videos, and issue-based posts aimed at explaining government decisions and responding to criticism surrounding examination reforms.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led the campaign by sharing selfie-style videos discussing examination reforms and thanking young Indians for their suggestions. His recent Instagram activity reportedly attracted around one million new followers, taking his total audience on the platform to nearly 105 million.
Digital Strategy After Student Protests
The BJP’s renewed digital campaign follows widespread student protests linked to the NEET-UG paper leak issue. The protests highlighted the growing influence of Instagram in shaping public opinion among young voters.
The party has focused its messaging on measures introduced to prevent examination malpractice, while also criticising opposition parties for allegedly avoiding constructive debate on reforms in Parliament.

Union Ministers Increase Social Media Activity
Several Union ministers have become noticeably more active on Instagram since the Prime Minister’s call for stronger digital outreach.
Education Minister Pralhad Joshi has shared multiple videos explaining the government’s examination reforms and defending the anti-paper leak law. He stated that the legislation provides strict punishment, including imprisonment of up to ten years and heavy financial penalties for those involved in organised examination fraud.
Union ministers including J.P. Nadda, Kiren Rijiju, Jitendra Singh, Piyush Goyal, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Annpurna Devi have also increased their Instagram activity by posting reels, speeches, and policy updates related to education reforms, recruitment transparency, and examination integrity.
Government Announces High-Level Reform Initiative
Prime Minister Modi recently announced the formation of a high-powered task force led by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani to recommend reforms aimed at making India’s examination system more secure and resistant to paper leaks.
The government has also introduced a Bill in Parliament proposing tougher punishments for organised examination fraud, including imprisonment of up to ten years and fines reaching ₹50 lakh.

As political parties increasingly rely on digital platforms to shape public opinion, Instagram has become an important battlefield for political communication.
