PM Modi chaired a Cabinet meeting amid Parliament protests as the Opposition demanded Amit Shah’s resignation. Lok Sabha also passed a key amendment bill.
Political tensions remained high during the Monsoon Session of Parliament on Friday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a Cabinet Meeting of the Union Cabinet inside Parliament House while both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha witnessed repeated disruptions. Opposition parties continued demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and insisted that he address the House over the ongoing issues.
The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Modi, took place amid the parliamentary deadlock, reflecting the government’s focus on legislative and administrative matters despite persistent protests in both Houses.
Birth and Death Registration Amendment Bill Passed
Despite opposition protests, the Lok Sabha passed the Births and Deaths Registration (Amendment) Bill by voice vote. The legislation was introduced by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai.
The amendment proposes stricter rules for delayed registration of births and deaths. Under the revised provisions, if a birth or death is reported after one year but within two years of the event, registration can only be approved by the District Magistrate (DM), Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), or another executive magistrate authorized by the District Magistrate.
The government said the amendment aims to strengthen delayed registration procedures while encouraging citizens to report births and deaths within the prescribed timeline.
Opposition Continues Protest in Both Houses
Throughout the day, opposition members disrupted proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, demanding that Home Minister Amit Shah appear before Parliament and respond to their concerns. The protests led to repeated interruptions before the Lok Sabha was eventually adjourned until 11:00 AM on Monday.

The Rajya Sabha also witnessed loud protests over police action during demonstrations related to the NEET issue, along with several other matters raised by opposition parties.
Kiren Rijiju Criticises Opposition
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the opposition for preventing meaningful debate on important legislation. He stated that the government had allocated sufficient time for discussion through the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) and urged opposition leaders not to claim that the Bill was passed without debate.
According to Rijiju, the government’s intention was to ensure active participation from all members before the legislation was approved.
CCS Meeting Held a Day Earlier
A day before the Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Modi had chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) at the Prime Minister’s Office within the Parliament complex.
The CCS reviewed the evolving security situation in West Asia and discussed the safety of Indian nationals abroad. The government emphasized that the death of any Indian sailor or citizen overseas would be treated with utmost seriousness and that India would strongly pursue accountability in such cases.
Focus Shifts to Next Phase of Parliament
With several key bills still pending and political confrontation continuing, the upcoming sittings of Parliament are expected to remain crucial. The government is likely to push ahead with its legislative agenda, while the opposition is expected to continue pressing its demands, setting the stage for another eventful week in the Monsoon Session.
