Arvind Kejriwal attacks the Centre over ethanol policy, alleging sugar shortages and raising concerns about E20 petrol, while the government defends the fuel policy.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has sharply criticised the Centre over its ethanol-blending policy, alleging that increased ethanol production from sugarcane has contributed to a shortage of sugar in the country.
In a post on X on Thursday, Kejriwal linked the government’s decision to divert sugarcane towards ethanol production with the need to import sugar. He argued that the policy was introduced to reduce the foreign exchange spent on crude oil imports but could now create another demand for foreign currency if sugar imports become necessary.
Taking a direct swipe at the Narendra Modi-led government, Kejriwal described it as a government “entirely run by illiterates” and questioned the consequences of its policy decisions.
Arvind Kejriwal Steps Up Attack on E20 Petrol
Arvind Kejriwal has been increasingly vocal about the government’s E20 petrol policy, which involves blending petrol with up to 20% ethanol. The former Delhi Chief Minister has argued that consumers should have greater clarity about the impact of ethanol-blended fuel on vehicles.
In another video shared on X, Kejriwal alleged that people raising concerns about E20 are facing restrictions on social media. He claimed that critical posts and videos were being removed and alleged that FIRs were being filed against some people.
Using a joke to attack the government, Kejriwal compared the alleged response to criticism of E20 with a situation where authorities force people to accept a particular narrative rather than address their concerns.
He questioned how the government could suppress criticism when a large section of the population has concerns about the fuel policy.

AAP Seeks Transparency Over E20 Fuel
The AAP has been campaigning against aspects of the E20 policy and has called for greater transparency over fuel quality, vehicle compatibility and testing results.
The party has also argued that consumers should have a choice at petrol stations, including access to conventional petrol where available, instead of being restricted to ethanol-blended fuel.
Centre Rejects Fuel as the Sole Reason for Mileage Changes
The government has maintained that E20 petrol cannot by itself be blamed for changes in vehicle mileage.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas recently said that real-world fuel economy depends on several factors, including driving patterns, traffic conditions, vehicle maintenance, tyre pressure and air-conditioner usage.
The ministry Arvind Kejriwal also said that E20 petrol has undergone extensive testing and validation. According to the government, mileage performance should be assessed in the context of overall driving and vehicle conditions rather than fuel alone.
Ethanol Policy Debate Continues
The dispute highlights the wider political debate over India’s ethanol-blending programme. While the government has promoted ethanol blending as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, opposition parties have raised questions about its impact on consumers, vehicles and agricultural commodities.
With Arvind Kejriwal continuing to target the Centre over E20 petrol, the issue is likely to remain a point of political discussion as questions surrounding fuel choice, vehicle compatibility and the broader economic impact of ethanol blending continue to attract attention.
