Manoj Sorathiya accuses the BJP government of weakening Surat’s textile industry, raising concerns over subsidies, rising costs and business challenges.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Gujarat State Organization General Secretary Manoj Sorathiya has criticised the BJP government over Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh’s visit to Surat, alleging that the city’s man-made fibre and textile industries are facing a severe crisis. He questioned the purpose of the government’s proposed ‘Reform Utsav’, arguing that textile businesses, weavers and traders are struggling with mounting financial pressures instead of receiving the support they need.
According to Manoj Sorathiya, the textile industry in Surat has suffered because of the withdrawal of subsidies, rising production costs, complicated GST procedures, declining demand and weak export activity. He claimed that traders who have invested substantial amounts in their businesses are now facing uncertainty and diminishing returns.
Manoj Sorathiya Questions Giriraj Singh’s Surat Visit
Reacting to Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh’s visit to Surat, Sorathiya pointed out that the minister was visiting the city for the second time in two and a half years. He questioned whether the visit would bring any meaningful relief to textile manufacturers and workers.
The AAP leader also criticised the government’s decision to organise a ‘Reform Utsav’ while, according to him, businesses in one of Gujarat’s major textile centres continue to face serious challenges. He argued that the government should focus on resolving industry-related problems rather than celebrating reforms whose benefits, he claimed, have not reached struggling traders.
Subsidy Cuts and Rising Costs Put Textile Businesses Under Pressure
Sorathiya alleged that the withdrawal of capital subsidies, electricity subsidies and support under the Textile Upgradation Fund has placed additional pressure on weavers and manufacturers.
He also highlighted rising yarn prices and difficulties associated with GST compliance as major concerns for textile businesses. According to the AAP leader, falling demand and stalled exports have further affected the market, making it increasingly difficult for traders to maintain profitable operations.
Manoj Sorathiya claimed that many businesses have invested crores of rupees but are now struggling to generate adequate returns. He called for measures that would address the industry’s financial difficulties and help businesses remain competitive.
Workers and Traders Face Infrastructure Challenges
The AAP leader also raised concerns about basic facilities in Surat’s industrial areas. He alleged that inadequate infrastructure and a lack of support for workers and traders have contributed to growing difficulties across the textile sector.

Sorathiya further claimed that workers are leaving Surat’s industrial units in increasing numbers. According to him, this migration is adding to the challenges faced by businesses that are already dealing with rising costs and reduced market opportunities.
He argued that improving industrial infrastructure and ensuring better working conditions should be among the government’s priorities if Surat is to maintain its position as a major textile manufacturing hub.
Competition With China Adds to Industry Concerns
Sorathiya said that Surat’s textile businesses are also under pressure from international competition, particularly from China. He alleged that Indian manufacturers are struggling to compete effectively while receiving insufficient relief to address their cost disadvantages.
The AAP leader maintained that the combination of higher production expenses, weaker demand and limited policy support has left traders in a difficult position. He called on the government to introduce effective measures that could help manufacturers improve competitiveness and revive business activity.
AAP Calls ‘Reform Utsav’ a Celebration of Industry’s Decline
In his concluding remarks, Sorathiya described the proposed ‘Reform Utsav’ as an inappropriate celebration at a time when, according to him, Surat’s textile industry is experiencing a downturn.
He also alleged that traders were being pressured or intimidated into attending government-related events instead of being given an opportunity to voice their concerns. These allegations were part of his wider criticism of the government’s approach to the textile sector.
Manoj Sorathiya warned that Gujarat’s traders would express their dissatisfaction with the BJP government in the future. He argued that the government should prioritise practical solutions for textile manufacturers, weavers and workers rather than promotional events.
The allegations reflect the AAP leader’s criticism of the BJP government’s handling of the textile sector. The claims regarding subsidy withdrawals, business conditions and pressure on traders would require independent verification to establish the full extent of the industry’s difficulties.
