Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Cabinet Minister Advocate Barinder Goyal met the families of eight labourers who lost their lives in a tragic Sangrur road accident near Alisher village in the Lehragaga area. The ministers also visited injured workers receiving treatment at the hospital and reviewed their medical condition.
The accident claimed eight lives and left more than 11 people injured. According to reports, the labourers had finished their work and were resting beside the road while drinking water when a speeding car struck them.
Ministers Visit Bereaved Families and Injured Workers
During their visit, Harpal Singh Cheema and Barinder Goyal offered support to the bereaved families and spoke with injured workers. They also sought updates from doctors regarding the patients’ health and the treatment being provided.
The ministers said the Punjab Government would extend assistance to the affected families during this difficult period. They also reiterated that ensuring proper medical care for the injured workers remained a priority.
The Sangrur road accident has raised concerns over the safety of labourers who work outdoors and use roadside areas to rest after completing their duties.
Punjab Government Announces ₹2 Lakh Compensation
Following the incident, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the family of each deceased labourer. The state government also announced that the full cost of medical treatment for those injured in the accident would be covered.
The ministers stated that legal action would be taken against the driver allegedly responsible for the collision. They added that if an investigation establishes negligence by officials responsible for worker safety, appropriate action would also follow.
The government’s announced measures are intended to provide immediate relief to the affected families and ensure that injured workers receive necessary treatment.

Labour Unions Reject Compensation Amount
Meanwhile, an action committee formed by labour organisations has rejected the government’s announced compensation of ₹2 lakh per deceased worker’s family, describing the amount as insufficient given the loss suffered by the families.
The committee has demanded higher financial compensation for each affected family and a government job for one member of every family that lost a loved one in the accident. It has also called for stricter implementation of workplace and roadside safety measures to prevent similar incidents.
Labour representatives expressed dissatisfaction with the response to the tragedy and warned of a strong protest if their demands were not addressed.
Unions Seek Long-Term Support for Affected Families
The labour organisations have argued that the families of the deceased need substantial financial assistance and long-term support to manage the consequences of losing their primary earners.
The Sangrur road accident has brought the demands for worker safety, adequate compensation and accountability into focus. The unions have urged the state government and local administration to take concrete steps to protect labourers and ensure that safety requirements are followed.
As the affected families cope with their loss, the immediate priorities remain medical care for the injured, assistance for the bereaved households and a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the collision.
The Sangrur road accident has also prompted calls from labour organisations for stronger safeguards and better support systems for workers and their families.
