Punjab completes 957 of 1,000 modern Anganwadi centres under a ₹100 crore project to improve child nutrition, early education and healthcare, says Dr Baljit Kaur.
The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has completed the construction of 957 out of the 1,000 modern Anganwadi centres planned across the state, marking a significant step towards improving facilities for women and children. Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr Baljit Kaur said construction work on the remaining centres is progressing rapidly. The state government has earmarked ₹100 crore for the initiative to strengthen child nutrition, early education and healthcare services at the grassroots level.
Punjab Modern Anganwadi Centres to Improve Childcare Services
Dr Baljit Kaur said the Punjab modern Anganwadi centres initiative aims to provide young children with a safe and supportive environment where they can access essential nutrition, healthcare and early learning opportunities.
According to the minister, the project reflects the state government’s focus on strengthening services for children and supporting the overall development of women and families. The centres are expected to improve access to essential facilities, particularly in rural areas.

₹100 Crore Allocated for 1,000 Centres
The minister explained that the construction of the Punjab modern Anganwadi centres is being carried out under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme in coordination with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The Punjab government has allocated ₹100 crore to develop 1,000 modern centres across the state. Of these, 957 have been completed, while work on the remaining facilities is underway.
The initiative is intended to strengthen village-level social infrastructure and ensure that children and women have better access to essential support services within their communities.
Focus on Nutrition, Healthcare and Early Education
Dr Baljit Kaur said the new centres will provide improved facilities for pre-primary education, supplementary nutrition, health check-ups and growth monitoring. These services are designed to support children’s physical development and prepare them for formal schooling.
Pregnant women and lactating mothers are also expected to benefit from improved access to nutrition-related support and healthcare services. By bringing multiple essential services together, the Punjab modern Anganwadi centres are expected to play an important role in supporting maternal and child health.
Dr Baljit Kaur Appeals for Community Participation
The minister emphasised that the project is not limited to constructing new buildings. Its broader objective is to create a supportive environment that promotes children’s health, learning and development while improving services for women.
She appealed to parents, Panchayati Raj institutions and local communities to take an active role in maintaining the centres and ensuring their effective use. Community participation, she said, can help ensure that eligible families receive the maximum benefit from the available facilities.
Punjab Government Focuses on Women and Child Welfare
The completion of 957 centres represents substantial progress towards the state’s target of establishing 1,000 modern Anganwadi facilities. The remaining construction work is progressing, according to Dr Baljit Kaur.
Through the Punjab modern Anganwadi centres project, the state government aims to strengthen early childhood care, improve nutrition services and expand access to healthcare and pre-primary education. The initiative is intended to provide children with a stronger foundation for the future while supporting mothers and families across Punjab.
