YouTube Custom Feeds lets users create personalized video recommendations with prompts. Explore its features, subscription limits and redesigned home tab.
YouTube is introducing new features to improve the home page experience for users on mobile devices and desktops. The Google-owned video streaming platform is rolling out a new feature that allows users to create personalized video feeds simply by describing the type of content they want to watch. Along with this update, YouTube is also redesigning its mobile home tab to make content discovery faster and more convenient.
The new YouTube Custom Feeds feature is designed to help users find videos that match their specific interests without having to search for similar content repeatedly. However, the feature is currently available only to eligible users in the United States, with support for the English language.
YouTube Custom Feeds: How Does the New Feature Work?
YouTube announced the new functionality through a community post, explaining how users can build customized feeds based on their viewing preferences. Instead of relying entirely on the platform’s standard recommendations, users can describe what they want to watch in their own words.
To create a feed, users need to tap the ‘+’ button at the top of the YouTube home feed and enter a prompt describing their interests. For example, someone looking for guided meditation sessions lasting less than 10 minutes or yoga classes can type that request into the prompt box.
Based on the description, YouTube Custom Feeds generates a personalized collection of videos relevant to the user’s preferences. This approach is intended to make it easier to discover specific types of content without manually searching for individual videos.

How Many Custom Feeds Can Users Save?
YouTube is offering different limits for free users and Premium subscribers. Users without a YouTube Premium subscription can save up to three active custom feeds, while Premium subscribers can save up to eight.
Once created, these feeds appear at the top of the screen, allowing users to switch between different interests quickly. Users can also modify an existing feed by tapping the prompt box at the top and updating their description.
However, these custom feed prompts are not permanent. YouTube says they expire after 30 days of inactivity, so users may need to refresh or recreate feeds that they no longer use regularly.
Another useful feature is cross-device synchronization. Feeds created on a mobile device will also be available on the desktop version, provided users are signed in to both devices with the same Google account.
Availability of YouTube Custom Feeds
The new feature is currently being rolled out in English to eligible signed-in users aged 13 and above in the United States. Users must also have their YouTube search history enabled to access the feature.
For now, availability remains limited to the US, but YouTube has indicated that it plans to expand access to more users and regions in the future. The company has not announced a specific timeline for a wider international rollout.
The introduction of YouTube Custom Feeds could give viewers more control over how they discover content, particularly those who regularly watch videos related to different hobbies, learning goals, fitness routines or entertainment interests.
YouTube Redesigns the Mobile Home Tab
Alongside personalized feeds, YouTube is updating the top bar of its mobile home page. The redesigned interface introduces dedicated content categories to help users access videos more quickly.
The standard feeds now include Live, Music, and Movies & TV. These options are available to users with active subscriptions to the relevant services, according to the platform’s announcement.
YouTube has also moved the Subscriptions feed, which previously appeared separately, directly into the top bar of the Home tab. The change is intended to make subscribed content easier to access without requiring users to navigate through different sections of the app.
What Does the Update Mean for YouTube Users?
With these changes, YouTube is focusing on a more personalized and convenient viewing experience. The new YouTube Custom Feeds feature allows users to describe their viewing interests directly, while the redesigned home tab provides quicker access to different content categories.
For viewers who enjoy multiple types of content, such as workouts, meditation, educational videos and entertainment, custom feeds could offer a more organized way to explore relevant recommendations.
Although the feature is currently limited by region and language, its planned expansion could make personalized video discovery available to a broader audience in the coming months. Until then, users outside the United States will have to wait for further announcements from YouTube regarding availability in their markets.
