Haryana’s ₹106.28 crore smart irrigation project in Hisar aims to supply 1.70 crore litres of treated water daily, benefiting 971 farmers.
The Haryana government is developing a major irrigation initiative in Hisar to conserve water, support farmers and reduce dependence on groundwater. The Haryana Smart Irrigation Project will be implemented in Gawad, Kalawas and Singhran villages at an estimated cost of ₹106.28 crore. The initiative aims to supply treated wastewater from Hisar city to agricultural fields through underground pipelines, benefiting 971 farmers and around 1,700 hectares of farmland.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, the state government is focusing on improving irrigation facilities and making better use of available water resources. The Haryana Smart Irrigation Project is expected to provide an additional source of irrigation water while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Farmers Briefed on the Project During Village Meeting
Virender Singh Badkhalsa, Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Chief Minister, interacted directly with farmers during a farmer outreach programme held in Gawad village. He shared details of the proposed project and discussed its potential benefits for the farming community.
He said the state government is prioritising water conservation, farmers’ welfare and the expansion of modern irrigation infrastructure. The initiative is designed to make productive use of treated wastewater and strengthen the existing irrigation system.
1.70 Crore Litres of Treated Water Planned Every Day
According to the project plan, approximately 1.70 crore litres of treated wastewater will be transported to agricultural fields every day from three sewage treatment plants located in Gangwa, Satrod and Dabda.
The Haryana Smart Irrigation Project will use underground pressurised pipelines to deliver water to farmland. This system is expected to reduce water losses caused by leakage and evaporation, helping improve the efficiency of water distribution.
Automated monitoring and software-based distribution will also be used to make water supply more organised and transparent. The system aims to support better management of irrigation resources across the project area.

Farmers Encouraged to Adopt Modern Irrigation Methods
During the interaction, Badkhalsa urged farmers to adopt water-efficient techniques such as drip and sprinkler irrigation. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening water user committees to improve coordination and ensure effective management of irrigation facilities.
He clarified that the project is intended to provide farmers with an additional source of irrigation water without affecting their existing rights under canal and tubewell irrigation systems.
The Haryana Smart Irrigation Project is therefore planned as a supplementary facility, giving farmers another option to meet agricultural water requirements while supporting the conservation of conventional water resources.
Focus on Water Conservation and Sustainable Agriculture
The initiative is expected to help reduce pressure on groundwater resources by making treated wastewater available for agricultural use. The underground pipeline network and digital monitoring system are also intended to improve water delivery and reduce avoidable losses.
By combining treated wastewater reuse with modern irrigation infrastructure, the Haryana Smart Irrigation Project aims to support more efficient water management and sustainable farming in the Hisar region.
Several officials and local representatives attended the programme, including Subhash Panihar, Gawad Water User Committee head Suresh, chairman Ajay Gawad, Mandal president Bhup Singh, Chief Engineer S.D. Sharma, Project Director Surender Dhankhar and Executive Engineer Munish Deshwal.
The project is expected to benefit local farmers by expanding irrigation access, encouraging efficient water use and strengthening Haryana’s broader efforts towards agricultural development and water conservation.
