Brazil embarks on a new era under Ancelotti
Brazil national team has entered a fresh phase with Carlo Ancelotti at the helm—their first foreign manager in 100 years. On Monday (May 26), during a press conference in Rio de Janeiro, Ancelotti announced a 25-man squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay. As the five-time champions aim for yet another World Cup appearance, the squad features a blend of experienced names and promising youngsters. Notably, star forward Neymar has been left out of the lineup.
A warm reception for Ancelotti
Carlo Ancelotti, formerly of Real Madrid, was warmly welcomed into the Brazil setup by two World Cup-winning coaches—Carlos Alberto Parreira (1994) and Luiz Felipe Scolari (2002). In a symbolic gesture, Scolari handed Ancelotti a Brazil team jacket and offered his encouragement, saying, “Just be yourself, the person you’ve always been, and you’ll find success with Brazil.”
Ancelotti on Neymar’s exclusion
Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to leave Neymar out of the squad has generated plenty of debate. Neymar, who recently returned to Santos following a muscle injury, was considered not fully fit for international duty.
“Unfortunately, several players, including Neymar, are unavailable due to injuries,” Ancelotti explained.
He emphasized that Neymar remains a key figure for Brazil: “We’re definitely counting on him. He returned to Brazil to get ready for the World Cup. I spoke with him this morning to explain the situation, and he completely understands.”
Vinicius Junior earns his spot
Ancelotti also responded to criticism aimed at Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior.
“I have no doubt that Vinicius will deliver his best performances for the national team,” said Ancelotti, who has won 15 titles during his time at Madrid.
Casemiro’s comeback
Midfielder Casemiro has been recalled to the national team after an absence of nearly 18 months. Ancelotti praised the Manchester United midfielder, stating, “The team needs players who bring charisma, personality, and talent. In modern football, having attitude, commitment, and willingness to sacrifice is equally important.”
Casemiro’s inclusion alongside Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle) and Andreas Pereira (Fulham) is expected to bolster Brazil’s midfield strength.
