India opener Abhishek Sharma hospitalised ahead of T20 World Cup 2026 match vs Namibia; Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson likely to open in his absence.
India opener Abhishek Sharma has been hospitalised in Delhi due to a stomach infection, raising concerns ahead of Team India’s T20 World Cup 2026 match against Namibia. The team management is monitoring his condition closely, while Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are likely to open the innings in his absence.
Sharma was admitted to a Delhi hospital on Tuesday night after his health worsened. Earlier, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate had revealed that the southpaw was suffering from a “stomach upset,” which prevented him from participating in the training session at Arun Jaitley Stadium ahead of the match.
At a pre-match press briefing, ten Doeschate expressed cautious optimism about Sharma’s recovery. “Abhi is still experiencing some tummy issues, but we hope he will be fit to play in two days,” he said.
Abhishek Sharma had previously struggled with health issues during India’s opening T20 World Cup game against the USA in Mumbai. Despite feeling unwell, he batted but was dismissed for a golden duck and did not field in the second innings. Although India had a five-day gap between their first and second matches, Sharma’s recovery hasn’t been smooth.

Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson Ready to Step Up
With Abhishek Sharma unavailable, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson took the first net sessions and are expected to open the batting against Namibia. Even if Sharma regains fitness, the team management may be cautious about risking him ahead of the high-profile India vs Pakistan match on February 15 in Colombo.
During practice, Kishan faced a challenging session against Hardik Pandya, while Samson struggled against Arshdeep Singh. Samson later received treatment on his left arm, reflecting ongoing fitness concerns.
Fitness Update: Bumrah and Washington Sundar
Meanwhile, pacer Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Washington Sundar joined the team training on February 10. However, Bumrah did not bowl at full intensity, and Sundar still appears to need more time to reach match readiness. The team is scheduled for another training session and a pre-match press conference to provide updates on player fitness before the Namibia clash.
India fans will closely watch Abhishek Sharma’s recovery as Team India prepares for its crucial fixtures in the T20 World Cup 2026.
