The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday issued a detailed eight-page advisory to all 10 IPL franchises, introducing stricter rules and reinforcing discipline following multiple protocol violations reported during the ongoing IPL 2026 season.
The newly released BCCI IPL SOP guidelines outline several Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that franchises, players, support staff, and owners will now be required to follow strictly to avoid disciplinary and security-related issues in the future.
In a communication sent to franchise CEOs, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the advisory was issued after incidents of misconduct and protocol breaches were flagged by the BCCI’s Anti Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU).
According to the BCCI IPL SOP guidelines, several cases were reported where unauthorized individuals were allowed access to players’ hotel rooms without prior approval from team management. The board described the issue as a serious security concern with possible legal implications.
BCCI IPL SOP Guidelines Ban Unauthorized Hotel Room Access for Players and Staff
The document clearly states that no guest, regardless of identity or relationship, can enter a player or support staff member’s hotel room without written permission from the Team Manager. Under the revised BCCI IPL SOP guidelines, visitors must only be received in designated public areas such as hotel lobbies or reception lounges.
The BCCI also warned franchises about potential risks of targeted compromise and “honey trapping” in high-profile sporting environments. The board emphasized that franchises must remain vigilant to avoid situations that could lead to serious allegations or security threats.

Another major concern raised under the BCCI IPL SOP guidelines involved the conduct of certain franchise owners during live matches. The BCCI noted instances where owners allegedly attempted to communicate with players, enter restricted zones, or physically interact with cricketers during ongoing matches.
The advisory clarified that franchise owners and their representatives are strictly prohibited from entering dugouts, dressing rooms, or playing areas during matches unless authorized under the Players and Match Officials Access (PMOA) protocol. Any violation of these BCCI IPL SOP guidelines could be treated as a serious offence.
BCCI IPL SOP Guidelines Impose Strict Ban on Vaping and Prohibited Substances
The board also introduced a strict ban on vaping and the use of prohibited substances within tournament premises. Although no player was directly named in the advisory, the move comes after recent controversy surrounding Riyan Parag, whose vaping visuals from a dressing room balcony had gone viral during the season.
The BCCI IPL SOP guidelines clearly mention that vapes and electronic cigarettes are prohibited under Indian law and cannot be used inside dressing rooms, dugouts, team hotels, or practice venues. The board warned that violations may not only breach IPL regulations but could also attract legal consequences under Indian statutory laws.
With the IPL entering a crucial phase of the tournament, the BCCI’s latest advisory aims to maintain professionalism, discipline, and security standards across all franchises and ensure that the league’s reputation remains protected.
