The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly preparing for a major transformation of the Indian Premier League, with IPL 2028 expansion plans expected to increase the tournament to 94 matches starting from the 2028 season.
According to reports, the board is planning to move away from the current “virtual group” format and introduce a complete home-and-away league structure involving all ten franchises. The proposed revamp is being considered one of the biggest structural changes in IPL history since the addition of new teams to the tournament.
IPL 2028 Expansion Plans to Introduce Full Home-and-Away League Format
The new IPL 2028 expansion plans aim to make the competition more balanced, fan-friendly, and commercially attractive for broadcasters worldwide. Under the proposed system, each franchise would face every other team twice during the league stage — once at home and once away.

This format would bring back the traditional double round-robin structure that was previously followed during the IPL’s eight-team era. As part of the IPL 2028 expansion plans, every franchise would play a total of 18 league matches, including nine home games and nine away fixtures.
The increase from the current 74-match structure to a 94-match tournament is expected to create greater continuity throughout the season while giving fans more high-profile clashes between major franchises.
IPL 2028 Expansion Plans Aim to Simplify League Format and Points Table
Reports suggest that the IPL 2028 expansion plans are also aimed at simplifying the points table and league format for viewers. The current grouping system has often created confusion among fans regarding qualification scenarios and scheduling patterns.
With the proposed changes, the BCCI is looking to create a more straightforward league system that mirrors major global sporting tournaments. The expanded calendar is also expected to significantly boost broadcasting revenue, sponsorship opportunities, and fan engagement across the season.
The IPL 2028 expansion plans would further strengthen the league’s position as one of the world’s biggest sporting competitions. A larger schedule would allow franchises to maximize home attendance, regional fan support, and commercial partnerships.
If implemented, the IPL 2028 expansion plans will mark a historic new chapter for the tournament, offering fans a longer and more competitive season while ensuring that every team gets equal home-and-away opportunities against all opponents.
