Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata on Friday to chair the crucial West Bengal BJP legislature party meeting, where the party is expected to finalise its choice for the next Chief Minister of the state. The oath-taking ceremony for the new government is scheduled to take place on May 9.
The West Bengal BJP legislature party meeting is expected to elect the leader of the House, a decision that will effectively determine the BJP’s chief ministerial face as the party prepares to form its first government in the state. Senior BJP leaders from the central leadership are closely monitoring the process amid heightened political activity following the end of the previous government’s tenure.
The development comes a day after the formal tenure of the outgoing West Bengal government ended on Thursday. The Governor officially dissolved the 17th West Bengal Legislative Assembly through a notification issued with effect from May 7.
Despite the dissolution of the Assembly, outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has continued referring to herself as the “Chief Minister of West Bengal” across her social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and X.

West Bengal BJP Legislature Party Meeting Highlights BJP’s Strong Electoral Gains Across New Constituencies
The ongoing West Bengal BJP legislature party meeting has gained significant political attention following the BJP’s major electoral breakthrough in the Assembly elections. According to the reported data, out of 95 BJP victories where deleted voter names exceeded the final winning margin, 80 constituencies were seats the party had not won previously.
The BJP managed to retain all 77 seats it secured during the 2021 Assembly elections while adding 130 new seats, marking a major expansion of the party’s footprint across the state.

One of the most high-profile contests took place in Bhabanipur, represented by Mamata Banerjee, where BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari defeated her by 15,105 votes. Reports stated that voter roll deletions in the constituency stood at 45,240.
In Tollygunge, minister Aroop Biswas lost by 6,013 votes, while 33,533 voter names were reportedly deleted. Similarly, Jadavpur witnessed a BJP victory margin of 27,716 votes alongside 45,892 deleted voter names.
The West Bengal BJP legislature party meeting is now being viewed as the final step before the official announcement of the state’s next Chief Minister. Political focus remains firmly on the BJP leadership as it prepares to take charge in a state that has long been dominated by the All India Trinamool Congress under Mamata Banerjee.
With the Legislative Assembly dissolved and the transition of power underway, the West Bengal BJP legislature party meeting is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the state’s next political chapter.
