AAP’s Karan Barot criticises AMC over recurring waterlogging during Ahmedabad Rain and demands permanent drainage solutions instead of temporary relief.
The recurring waterlogging problem during Ahmedabad Rain has triggered fresh criticism of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Gujarat State Organization Minister and Chief Spokesperson Dr. Karan Barot accused the civic body of failing to address repeated drainage and waterlogging issues despite having prior information about vulnerable areas.
Barot said the Corporation had already identified locations where drainage systems were inadequate and where rainwater regularly accumulated. However, he alleged that effective and permanent corrective measures have still not been taken.
AAP Questions AMC’s Monsoon Preparations
According to Dr. Karan Barot, the previous spell of Ahmedabad Rain caused extensive damage across Ahmedabad and several parts of Gujarat. He claimed that rainwater entered homes and complexes, while numerous vehicles were damaged after being caught in flooded streets.
Barot also alleged that many residents suffered losses running into crores of rupees and that compensation for the damage has not yet reached affected people.
He questioned the effectiveness of the Corporation’s pre-monsoon preparations, particularly the repeated announcements of major drainage projects and spending on improving water discharge systems.
‘Same Areas Are Flooding Again’
Dr. Karan Barot said the return of rainfall has once again exposed the same weaknesses in the city’s drainage infrastructure. According to him, several areas that experienced severe waterlogging earlier are facing similar conditions again.
He argued that repeated flooding in the same locations cannot simply be treated as an unavoidable consequence of heavy rainfall. Instead, the civic administration should use information gathered during previous rain events to identify the root causes and implement permanent solutions.
The AAP leader said Ahmedabad Rain should not become an occasion for repeated emergency measures every year. He called for long-term infrastructure improvements rather than temporary arrangements.
Barot Takes Aim at Boat-Based Relief
Barot also criticised the use of boats to reach waterlogged residential societies during severe rainfall. He said providing assistance to residents trapped by water is necessary, but turning such rescue efforts into a publicity exercise is not a substitute for solving the underlying problem.
He questioned why civic authorities have to use boats to reach the same residential areas repeatedly when those locations could have been identified as vulnerable after previous flooding.
According to Barot, the priority should be preventing water from entering residential societies in the first place rather than taking credit for reaching affected areas after flooding has already occurred.
Traffic, Vehicle Damage and Potholes Add to Residents’ Problems
The AAP spokesperson further highlighted the wider difficulties faced by Ahmedabad residents during heavy rainfall. He said people often hesitate to leave their homes because of traffic congestion, flooded roads and the risk of damage to their vehicles.
He also raised concerns about potholes and road accidents, saying waterlogged roads can make it difficult for motorists to identify dangerous stretches and open potholes.
Barot argued that the combination of waterlogging, damaged roads and traffic congestion has increased the difficulties faced by ordinary residents during Ahmedabad Rain.

AAP Demands Long-Term Action from AMC
Dr. Karan Barot urged the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to learn from previous rainfall incidents and take preventive measures before the situation worsens.
He called for stronger drainage infrastructure, better water-discharge arrangements and timely action in areas repeatedly affected by flooding. According to him, the civic body should focus on preventing recurring waterlogging instead of relying primarily on emergency response.
Barot said residents should not have to face the same problems every time it rains. He appealed to the Corporation to take all necessary steps to protect people, homes and vehicles during the current monsoon spell.
‘People Will Not Accept Repeated Failure’
The AAP leader warned that Ahmedabad residents are increasingly frustrated with recurring waterlogging and the lack of a permanent solution. He said repeated assurances and pre-monsoon claims would not be enough unless visible improvements were made on the ground.
Barot stressed that the real test of the civic administration is whether it can prevent repeated flooding in known problem areas. He said Ahmedabad Rain should not repeatedly expose the same shortcomings and urged the Corporation to move beyond temporary relief measures and implement a lasting solution.
