Amit Shah highlights the resilience of Somnath Temple, saying Sanatan Dharma is eternal like the Sun and Moon, surviving centuries of attacks.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated multiple development projects in Gandhinagar on Tuesday. During the event, he highlighted the historical resilience of the Somnath Temple, recalling repeated attacks on it over centuries. Shah emphasized that though those who tried to destroy the temple have vanished, the temple still stands proudly today.
Shah stated that India’s Sanatan Dharma, its rich culture, and the faith of its people cannot be easily erased. Referring to the Somnath Temple’s history, he mentioned that the temple has been destroyed 16 times but was rebuilt each time. “Those who attacked the Somnath Temple are no more, yet the temple continues to stand tall with pride,” he remarked.
Sanatan Dharma: Eternal Like the Sun and Moon
During his visit to Gujarat, Shah inaugurated and laid the foundation for development projects worth ₹267 crore. He said, “Even after being destroyed 16 times, the Somnath Temple stands with dignity and honor after a thousand years, with the Dharmadhwaj waving atop it. This sends a message to the world: India’s Sanatan Dharma, culture, and the faith of its people are eternal, like the sun and moon. The Somnath Temple symbolizes India’s faith, trust, and pride.”

PM Modi Launches Somnath Pride Festival
Earlier on January 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Somnath Pride Festival. The festival commemorates the 1000-year history of the temple, including attacks by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026 and subsequent reconstruction. Amit Shah revealed that under PM Modi’s leadership, a grand corridor will be developed at the temple, and various awareness programs will be organized throughout the year to educate citizens about its cultural and spiritual significance.
Temple Attacks Were Attacks on Faith
Shah noted, “The attack on the Somnath Temple a thousand years ago by Mahmud of Ghazni was not just an attack on a building but an assault on our faith, belief, and self-respect. Later invaders, including Alauddin Khilji, Ahmed Shah, Mahmud Begda, and Aurangzeb, also attacked the temple. However, every attack was followed by its reconstruction. The attackers are gone, but the temple still stands with pride.”
He added, “The response to such attacks cannot be retaliation in the same form. The answer lies in self-respect, resilience, and preserving our faith. The Somnath Temple teaches us that our culture and spirituality are indestructible.”
The Home Minister’s remarks reinforce the importance of preserving India’s heritage and the enduring legacy of Sanatan Dharma, inspiring citizens to honor their culture and faith.
