Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener Arvind Kejriwal has intensified his criticism of the Central Government over the rollout of the E-20 petrol policy, alleging that automobile manufacturers are being discouraged from speaking publicly about its impact on vehicles manufactured before 2023.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Arvind Kejriwalclaimed the policy could affect millions of existing vehicle owners and urged the Centre to reconsider its implementation strategy.
Kejriwal Claims Auto Manufacturers Fear Speaking Out
According to Arvind Kejriwal, he recently wrote to 29 automobile companies seeking clarification on whether vehicles manufactured before 2023 are fully compatible with E-20 fuel. He also asked whether companies would compensate customers if the use of E-20 fuel resulted in engine damage or reduced fuel efficiency.
He alleged that although no company issued an official response, representatives from several manufacturers privately expressed concerns about the compatibility of older vehicles with the fuel blend.
Arvind Kejriwal further claimed that these companies were reluctant to speak publicly because they feared repercussions. However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and the companies mentioned have not issued official statements regarding his claims.
Concerns Over Older Vehicles
The AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal alleged that nearly 300 million vehicles manufactured before 2023 could face technical challenges if E-20 petrol is widely adopted. He argued that the policy could place an additional financial burden on vehicle owners if modifications or repairs become necessary.
He called for greater transparency from both the government and automobile manufacturers regarding long-term compatibility and consumer protection measures.

Questions Government’s Ethanol Policy
Arvind Kejriwal also questioned the broader benefits of the government’s ethanol-blended fuel programme, claiming that the expected economic and environmental advantages require more public discussion.
He said his party had planned to organise a public town hall on the issue but alleged that permission for the event was withdrawn before it could take place.
Calls for Review of the E-20 Rollout
Urging the Central Government to revisit the policy, Kejriwal said any major change affecting vehicle owners should be supported by scientific evidence, industry consultation, and public awareness.
He maintained that motorists deserve clear information about the compatibility of their vehicles before the transition to E-20 fuel becomes widespread.
Comments on Other Public Issues
During the press conference, Kejriwal also criticised the current administration over civic infrastructure, alleging worsening waterlogging and delays in addressing basic urban issues.
He additionally questioned the eligibility criteria under the Lakshmi Yojana, claiming that only a small section of women would qualify under the present rules.
The Central Government has maintained that the E-20 petrol initiative is part of India’s long-term strategy to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, increase ethanol usage, support farmers, and promote cleaner transportation fuels.
