Arvind Kejriwal claims Meta restricted his account in India and questions the company over the alleged action and lack of explanation.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convener and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has claimed that Meta has restricted his account in India and questioned the technology company over the alleged action.
Arvind Kejriwal, in a post on X on Thursday, said he had sought an explanation from Meta regarding the reported restriction but had not received a clear response. He also urged the social media giant not to come under political pressure.
Arvind Kejriwal Questions Meta Over Account Restriction
According to Kejriwal, verbal enquiries at Meta’s India office indicated that his account had been restricted and was not available to users in India. He questioned why the restriction had been imposed and said he had not been given details about the reason or a process to restore access.
The AAP leader also claimed that emails sent to the company had only received routine acknowledgements without a substantive response.
Arvind Kejriwal urged Meta not to “bow down” to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, making the allegation in the context of what he described as the company’s handling of his account.
Hi @Meta @metaindia
Why have you restricted my account? Verbal enquiries at your India office revealed that my account has been restricted in India and is unavailable in India. Why? Noone in your office is giving any reasons. Noone is suggesting how restrictions can be removed.… pic.twitter.com/4JThAqFMon

Meta Under Scrutiny in India
Arvind Kejriwal’s claim comes at a time when Meta is facing increased scrutiny from Indian authorities over content moderation and platform operations.
Sources cited in the information provided said Meta has faced questions over alleged advertisements connected with Child Sexual Exploitative and Abuse Material (CSEAM) following a media report. According to the sources, the company acknowledged that illegal content had been promoted through paid advertisements targeted at a specific audience.
The company is expected to face further questioning over the matter.
Zuckerberg Reportedly Apologised Over Content Issues
Sources also said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologised to the Indian government over concerns involving child sexual abuse material, deepfake content and operational errors on the platform.
The issue has also raised questions about the extent to which Meta can claim intermediary protection under India’s information technology framework when it exercises control over the distribution or targeting of content.
Meta Delegation Meets MeitY Officials
A senior Meta delegation led by Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan met Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Secretary S Krishnan on Wednesday.
The meeting reportedly lasted around 45 minutes. Meta representatives discussed the removal of a video posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Facebook, which the company had earlier attributed to a technical error.
The video was subsequently restored.

Parliamentary Panel Seeks Explanation From Meta
The controversy surrounding the removal of PM Modi’s video has also reached the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology.
The committee reportedly sought an “unqualified apology” from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the incident and raised concerns about the platform’s legal protections in India.
BJP MP and committee chairperson Nishikant Dubey had earlier said Meta acknowledged that the Prime Minister’s video was unavailable for more than four hours. He also raised the possibility of action concerning Meta’s safe-harbour protection under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act if the company failed to provide an adequate response.
Meta Cited Technical Error Behind PM Modi Video Removal
Meta had previously explained that the Facebook video featuring Prime Minister Modi on action against examination paper leaks was removed because of a technical error.
The company later restored the video.
The latest developments have placed Meta’s content moderation practices, account restrictions and legal obligations in India under greater public and political scrutiny. Arvind Kejriwal’s claim regarding his account restriction adds another dimension to the debate, although the reason for the alleged restriction has not been publicly established in the information provided.
