Arvind Kejriwal questions the detention of CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, asking whether hoisting the Indian national flag is now a crime.
The detention of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka following an incident at Jantar Mantar has triggered a political controversy. The two leaders were sent to five days of judicial custody by a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court, prompting strong objections from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal questioned whether hoisting the Indian national flag had now become a crime in the country.
Arvind Kejriwal Criticises the Action Against CJP Leaders
Reacting to the development on social media platform X, Kejriwal described the arrest of Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka over the Tricolour incident as ridiculous. He questioned why young people should be prevented from hoisting the national flag and accused the BJP and its ideological organisation of hostility towards the Tricolour.
Arvind Kejriwal on Tricolour Row has become a central part of the political debate, with AAP leaders linking the incident to freedom of expression and democratic rights. The party has also compared the situation to the Emergency imposed in India in 1975.
Sanjay Singh Targets Prime Minister Narendra Modi
AAP senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh also criticised the action against the CJP members. Addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Singh questioned whether the country was witnessing a situation similar to British rule, where raising the national flag and chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” could lead to punishment.
According to Singh, Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde went to Jantar Mantar, raised the Tricolour and chanted patriotic slogans. He alleged that sending two of the members to judicial custody was an attempt to silence young people.
Singh warned the government against taking on the country’s youth and claimed that such actions could have political consequences. He also alleged that the government was attempting to suppress dissent through its actions against opposition voices.

AAP Compares the Situation to the 1975 Emergency
AAP Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj drew parallels between the current political climate and the Emergency declared in 1975. He cited allegations surrounding elections, youth movements, economic difficulties and political tensions as similarities between the two periods.
Bharadwaj questioned the decision to send Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to five days of judicial custody. He claimed that the incident raised concerns about democratic freedoms and the treatment of people expressing opposition to the government.
Arvind Kejriwal also argued that political organisations that have historically criticised the Emergency should address concerns raised by the opposition over the current situation. These statements reflect AAP leaders’ political allegations and comparisons rather than an official declaration of an Emergency.
What Happened at Jantar Mantar?
The incident reportedly took place on October 13, 2026. According to the information provided, the Delhi Police Commissioner issued an order on October 11 removing Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest sites.
Despite the restriction, three CJP members allegedly reached the location, crossed barricades and passed through closed iron gates to enter the area. They reportedly raised the Tricolour and shouted slogans, following which the police detained them.
Police registered a case involving alleged criminal trespass and violation of prohibitory orders. The three members were subsequently presented before a Special Executive Magistrate court.
The court sent Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to five days of judicial custody, while Ajinkya Shinde was released conditionally. According to the supplied information, Shinde was asked to furnish a bail bond of ₹5,000 and comply with a condition not to disturb public order for six months.
Political Debate Intensifies Over the Tricolour Incident
Arvind Kejriwal on Tricolour Row has intensified the debate over the arrests, with AAP leaders accusing the government of undermining democratic rights. The party has repeatedly invoked the 1975 Emergency while criticising the handling of the case.
The police action, meanwhile, has been linked to alleged violations of restrictions at Jantar Mantar and unauthorised entry into the area. The allegations and political responses have placed the incident at the centre of a wider dispute between AAP and the BJP.
Arvind Kejriwal on Tricolour Row remains a key issue in the political exchanges following the court’s decision. Further developments will depend on the legal proceedings and any subsequent action taken by the parties involved.
