The Char Dham Yatra has been temporarily suspended from Saturday afternoon through Sunday in Uttarakhand due to forecasts of heavy rainfall and red and orange weather alerts across several districts.

The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to protect pilgrims travelling to the Himalayan shrines. Garhwal Commissioner Anand Swaroop has directed district magistrates to take necessary measures in their respective areas and ensure the safety of devotees.

According to the administration, the Char Dham Yatra will resume once weather conditions improve and the routes are considered safe for pilgrims.

Red and Orange Rain Alerts Across Uttarakhand

The India Meteorological Department has issued red, orange and yellow alerts for different parts of Uttarakhand for September 26 and 27. The forecast includes the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several locations.

For Saturday, a red alert has been issued for Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Champawat, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar. Dehradun, Pauri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Almora are under an orange alert, while Haridwar, Uttarkashi and Tehri have been placed under a yellow alert.

On Sunday, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri and Haridwar are under a red alert. Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Nainital and Rudraprayag have been placed under an orange alert, while Bageshwar, Almora, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar and Pithoragarh are under a yellow alert.

Pilgrim Safety Remains Priority

The suspension of the Char Dham Yatra has been announced with the safety of pilgrims in mind. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also directed officials to maintain heightened vigilance in districts covered by red and orange alerts. District emergency operation centres have been instructed to remain active and weather warnings are to be communicated promptly at the local level.

The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Uttarakhand during this period, with heavy rainfall expected in parts of the state.
